About

Mario Is Missing! for the NES is a 1993 geography-focused adventure starring Luigi rather than his captured brother. Developed for Nintendo Entertainment System hardware by Radical Entertainment, the console edition was released in North America by The Software Toolworks, while Mindscape handled PAL distribution. It uses familiar Mario characters and colorful side-view action for an educational journey through real-world cities, but it is a distinct game from the more point-and-click-oriented computer versions of Mario Is Missing!.

Bowser has moved his operation to Antarctica and imprisoned Mario, leaving Luigi and Yoshi to disrupt the Koopa King's scheme. From Bowser's base, Luigi uses the Passcode-Operated Remote Transportation and Larceny System, or PORTALS, to reach cities targeted by Koopa thieves. The objective is not simply to reach a flagpole or defeat enemies: Luigi must learn where he is, recover stolen landmarks and treasures, then keep closing the routes that Bowser's forces use to move around the globe.

Each destination combines simple platform-style exploration with geography questions. Luigi walks through a city's streets with a map and compass, talks to residents, and consults information found at local landmarks. Those clues help identify the city and explain the significance of the objects the Koopas have taken. The game turns its setting into part of the challenge, asking players to connect names, locations and landmarks before they can put a city back in order.

Koopas carrying stolen items provide the action element. Luigi can jump on them to reclaim artifacts, then bring each object to the appropriate tourist information center. There, answering questions about an artifact confirms that it is being returned to the proper place. Successful returns add photographs to Luigi's collection, making the game's progress a record of the places and landmarks restored during the rescue mission.

Yoshi is essential to moving forward. Luigi can use the Globulator to guide Yoshi across a world map and summon him to the current city. Once reunited, Yoshi can remove the Pokey blocking the way back to Bowser's Antarctic headquarters. That loop of exploring a city, gathering facts, defeating item-carrying Koopas, returning treasures and bringing Yoshi to the exit shapes the NES Mario Is Missing! experience.

The NES version is a single-player cartridge game that uses passwords to preserve progress. It belongs to the early wave of licensed Mario educational games, placing a geography lesson inside a Mario-themed quest rather than presenting a conventional Super Mario platformer. Its premise also gave Luigi an uncommon leading role for its era, years before Luigi's Mansion made him the headline character of a major Nintendo adventure. Mario Is Missing! remains a notably unusual NES entry: a globe-trotting recovery game where curiosity about cities and landmarks is as important as timing a jump.
