About

Army Men: Sarge's Heroes brings The 3DO Company's toy-soldier series to PlayStation as a third-person action game built around Green Army Sergeant Hawk, better known as Sarge. Released for PlayStation in 2000, this version puts the plastic soldiers' war in a more character-driven setting than the earlier strategy-focused Army Men games. Colonel Grimm's Green Army is under attack from General Plastro and the Tan Army, while the enemy's discovery of portals between the soldiers' world and a full-size human world raises the stakes. Sarge is sent into the fighting to rescue allies, stop the invasion, and close the route between the two worlds.

The campaign moves between two contrasting scales. In Their World, the Green and Tan armies fight across military bases, forests, towns, mountains, and snowbound territory as if the molded figures were life-size troops. In Our World, the same characters are tiny figures navigating oversized domestic locations such as kitchens, bedrooms, gardens, sandboxes, and bathrooms. Everyday objects become part of the battlefield, and the change in scale gives familiar spaces a different sense of danger. The premise lets the game shift from conventional army encounters to conflicts where a household hazard can be as threatening as an enemy vehicle.

PlayStation missions follow Sarge through fourteen stages, each combining several objectives. Assignments include locating and freeing members of Bravo Company, escorting or protecting key characters, destroying portals and equipment, finding spies, clearing enemy positions, and dealing with armored opposition. The story introduces Colonel Grimm's daughter Vikki, a reporter for Green Star News, along with members of Bravo Company whose rescue affects the mission at hand. A rescued companion can fight beside Sarge, so keeping allies alive is often as important as reaching the next checkpoint.

Combat uses an over-the-shoulder camera by default, with alternate front-facing and first-person views available. Sarge can run, crouch, crawl, roll, jump, climb, use ledges, strafe, and approach opponents carefully, giving the missions a little more movement variety than a straight shooting gallery. Boot Camp serves as the PlayStation version's training area, explaining the controls, traversal, weapon handling, and basic combat before the main operation begins. The campaign is structured around clear goals, but the 3D environments leave room to explore the immediate battlefield and choose a practical route through hazards.

Sarge begins with an M16 rifle and can acquire heavier or more specialized equipment as the campaign progresses. The available arsenal includes a machine gun, sniper rifle, shotgun, grenades and grenade launcher, bazooka, mortar, flamethrower, artillery launcher, C-4, satchel charges, mines, and a mine detector. Certain encounters reward using the right tool: explosives are useful against armored targets and bunker defenses, while the sniper rifle can handle enemies positioned beyond normal rifle range. Extra gear is precious because it can be lost with a life, making careful use of supplies part of surviving the longer objectives.

The game was developed and published for PlayStation by The 3DO Company. Creative director Michael Mendheim and 3DO framed Sarge's Heroes as an action-adventure entry that could emphasize named characters, personality, and the toy-like appeal of the series. The PlayStation team was led technically by Bob Smith, and the console's video capability was used for video cutscenes. Jim Cummings voices the male characters, while Susan Blu voices Vikki, helping distinguish the squad from the anonymous units of the franchise's earlier games.

Army Men: Sarge's Heroes also includes local split-screen multiplayer for two players on PlayStation. Players can choose soldiers from the green, tan, gray, or blue forces in competitive modes that include deathmatch, capture the flag, and base-invasion battles. A Family Mode lets participants select individual difficulty and weapon settings, an option intended to make shared matches more flexible. The PlayStation release is distinct from the later Dreamcast and Windows versions: its 3DO-developed campaign has fourteen missions and its multiplayer supports two participants, rather than the expanded arrangements associated with other ports.

Contemporary reviews were mixed, frequently recognizing the appealing toy-war concept, varied weapons, missions, and humor while criticizing the PlayStation version's controls, camera behavior, fog, and technical roughness. Even so, its plastic-soldier perspective, giant household battlegrounds, and cast of recurring characters made it a recognizable chapter in the Army Men series. It was followed by Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2, while Sarge, Vikki, Colonel Grimm, General Plastro, and Bravo Company continued to appear in later games. For PlayStation players looking for a late-1990s style third-person shooter with an unusual miniature-world premise, Sarge's Heroes combines arcade action with missions that make the scale of its toy battlefield central to the adventure.
