About

Pong: The Next Level is a 1999 PlayStation remake of Atari's pioneering paddle-and-ball game. Developed by Supersonic Software and published under the Atari name, it takes the familiar contest of returning a ball past an opposing paddle and rebuilds it as a 3D, level-based game.

The core matches retain the direct back-and-forth scoring of classic Pong, but the arenas introduce hazards and changing surfaces that can alter a rally. Power-ups add temporary advantages, while environmental effects make timing and paddle positioning more important than in the original minimalist game.

Its single-player progression is divided into themed zones containing a range of challenges. Some stages are conventional matches against computer opponents, while others are solo tests built around keeping the ball in play or completing a particular task under unusual arena conditions.

Every level offers three versions that increase in difficulty. Clearing them earns gold bars used to open further content, so replaying earlier stages at a tougher setting is part of advancing through the game.

Multiplayer is available in the match stages, including Last Pong Standing, a mode that assigns players sections of an arena to defend as they try to eliminate one another. The PlayStation release also includes unlockable emulations of the original Pong and additional classic-style variants.

With its late-1990s presentation, Pong: The Next Level is a substantial reinterpretation rather than a straight port. It preserves the immediate paddle-and-ball premise while adding objectives, changing arenas, and progression designed for solo or competitive play.
