About
Warcraft II: The Dark Saga brings Blizzard's fantasy real-time strategy campaign to PlayStation as a single-player compilation of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and its Beyond the Dark Portal expansion. Players revisit the Second War from both sides of the conflict, commanding the human Alliance or the invading Orcish Horde across a broad collection of story missions and standalone scenarios.
Each battle begins with the work of establishing an economy. Peasants and peons gather gold and lumber, while offshore oil becomes important once naval construction enters the picture. Town Halls and Great Halls turn those resources into expanding bases, and farms provide the food needed to field a larger army.
The two factions share the same basic strategic rhythm but approach combat through different rosters, structures, and magic. Players build barracks, shipyards, and later specialized buildings to unlock tougher troops, ships, flying units, and spellcasters. Winning often means scouting the map, protecting workers, choosing the right counters, and breaking the opposing force's production rather than simply rushing its first defenses.
Campaign objectives add variety to the familiar build-and-destroy framework. Some missions ask players to rescue allies, protect an important unit, seize a key position, or make a dangerous advance through unexplored territory. Fog of war keeps unknown ground hidden and makes reconnaissance a practical part of every operation.
The Dark Saga adapts the original mouse-driven design to a PlayStation controller while preserving the overhead battlefield view, minimap, unit commands, and construction menus. Its console-focused conveniences include automatic building upgrades and queued unit production, helping players keep a base running while attention is needed at the front line.
Another notable change is the ability to select and command up to sixteen units together, expanding on the PC game's nine-unit selection limit. Grouping a larger force makes it easier to coordinate attacks, pull damaged troops back, or move an escort through enemy territory with fewer repeated commands.
With both major Warcraft II campaigns included, The Dark Saga offers a substantial tour of Azeroth's human-and-orc war for players who experienced the series on Sony's console. It remains a resource-management strategy game at heart: grow carefully, reveal the battlefield, develop the right technology, and turn a functioning settlement into an army capable of finishing the war.
