About

Rayman 2: The Great Escape is a 3D platform game starring Rayman, the limbless hero of Ubi Soft's Rayman series. This PlayStation edition was developed by Ubi Soft Shanghai and published by Ubi Soft. It brought the game to Sony's original PlayStation after the Nintendo 64, Windows, and Dreamcast releases, arriving in Europe on 8 September 2000.

The story takes place in the Glade of Dreams, which has been overrun by Admiral Razorbeard and his Robo-Pirates. Their attack shatters the Primordial Core and scatters the world's energy as Yellow Lums, while Rayman is captured and stripped of his powers. Guided by Ly the Fairy and aided by friends including Globox and the Teensies, Rayman escapes to begin restoring the world.

Play is presented from a third-person perspective across a mostly linear sequence of 3D stages. Rayman explores forests, caves, sanctuaries, pirate strongholds, and other fantastical locations, using jumps, climbing, swimming, and environmental objects to negotiate routes. The game mixes traversal with combat, platforming challenges, puzzles, and hidden collectibles.

As the adventure progresses, Rayman regains and expands his abilities. His principal attack launches energy spheres, which can later be charged for greater force, and a strafing stance helps with aiming. Other recurring movement tools include helicopter hair for slowing descents, Purple Lums for swinging across gaps, and vehicles or objects such as rockets, plums, and explosive barrels.

Collecting Yellow Lums opens the way to further areas and reveals more of the setting's background. Many Lums and captives are held in cages, encouraging players to revisit levels and search off the direct route. Rayman's wider objective is to recover four magical masks so that Polokus, the spirit of the world, can awaken and help defeat the invading pirates.

The PlayStation version was built around the console's technical limits rather than being identical to the earlier editions. Ubi Soft Shanghai created a dedicated engine for the system and altered parts of the level design to fit its memory constraints. This edition also adds voice acting and uses CD audio, while preserving the central quest, characters, and major gameplay systems of Rayman 2.

The campaign culminates aboard Razorbeard's ship, the Buccaneer, where Rayman frees prisoners and confronts the admiral's Grolgoth machine. Rayman 2 marked the series' shift from the original game's 2D format to a fully 3D adventure, and the PlayStation release remains its own version of that transition rather than the separate PlayStation 2 reinterpretation, Rayman Revolution.
