About

To Heart PS2 is Leaf’s school-life romance adventure for PlayStation 2, published by Aquaplus in Japan on December 28, 2004. This release is not ToHeart2, its separately sold sequel; it is the original ToHeart presented as a PlayStation 2 version and included only with the ToHeart & ToHeart2 Limited Deluxe Pack. Aquaplus described it as a powered-up PS2 edition of the earlier PlayStation release. The game returns to the everyday world of high-school student Hiroyuki Fujita, where the arrival of spring brings familiar friends, unexpected encounters, and the possibility of romance.

To Heart PS2 is a visual novel: most of its play is spent reading narration and dialogue, watching character portraits and event artwork, and deciding how Hiroyuki responds. At key moments, the player chooses from several actions or replies. Those choices influence the direction of the story, so a seemingly ordinary conversation can determine which character’s events become available. Rather than relying on action-game reflexes, the experience is built around following scenes closely, making decisions, and replaying from new choices to explore different outcomes.

The story’s school setting is grounded in routines such as the trip to class, time at school, after-school encounters, and the journey home. Hiroyuki’s childhood friend Akari Kamigishi is central to that familiar atmosphere, while the larger cast broadens it in very different directions. Players can meet the energetic Shiho Nagaoka, class representative Tomoko Hoshina, wealthy occult-club member Serika Kurusugawa, and Multi, the HMX-12 prototype household robot sent to school to learn about people. Other routes involve characters including Ayaka Kurusugawa, Lemmy Miyauchi, Aoi Matsubara, Kotone Himekawa, and Rio Hinayama.

Each heroine has her own storyline and ending, giving To Heart its route-based structure. Progress is shaped by which locations Hiroyuki visits and by the decisions made during character events; pursuing every path requires multiple playthroughs. The console lineage also carries extra diversions alongside the main reading-and-choice format, including lighthearted minigames using the cast. These optional activities do not change the game’s focus: the heart of To Heart is seeing how a shared school year changes as Hiroyuki spends time with different people.

The PS2 edition arrived at an important point for the series, on the same day as ToHeart2’s Japanese debut. Its deluxe package paired the new sequel with this revised version of the first game, making the release a retrospective companion rather than a new numbered entry. That distinction matters for anyone exploring the catalog: To Heart PS2 follows Hiroyuki, Akari, Multi, and the original cast and story framework, whereas ToHeart2 introduces a different school setting and a new lead character. For players interested in Leaf and Aquaplus visual novels, the PS2 release preserves the original game’s branching school-romance format within its 2004 limited-package context.
