About
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 4 is a PlayStation 2 fighting game developed by CyberConnect2. It is the Western version of Naruto Shippuden: Narutimate Accel, the first Accel entry released in Japan. The Japanese edition arrived in 2007, while the North American release followed in 2009, bringing the Ultimate Ninja series into Naruto Shippuden's later era of the story.
Matches use the series' anime-styled, side-view arena format, with characters trading melee strings, throwing ninja tools, managing chakra and looking for openings to use ninjutsu. Substitution techniques can break an opponent's pressure, while Ultimate Jutsu turn a successful setup into a dramatic special attack. Jutsu clashes add a fast contest when two fighters commit to opposing moves, and the outcome changes who finishes the exchange at an advantage.
The game expands the combat system with character-specific Awakening states. These transformations are tied to particular conditions rather than being a single universal trigger, so a fighter's health, actions or other circumstances can shape when their powered-up form becomes available. Entering an awakened state changes the tactical rhythm of a bout and can give access to a stronger finishing technique.
Master Mode combines fighting with an action-adventure structure. Controlling Naruto, players travel through connected areas, speak with characters, take on battles and complete objectives as the story advances. Its opening Black Shadow episode is an original scenario created for the game, set during Naruto's journey with Jiraiya before the main Shippuden narrative begins.
After that original chapter, Master Mode moves into the early Kazekage Rescue storyline. The game covers only part of that arc, reflecting the point the anime and manga had reached during its development. Hero's History is also included for a return to material from the original Naruto series, presenting familiar earlier events alongside the newer Shippuden content.
The 52-character roster mixes returning fighters from the original series with Shippuden versions and newcomers, giving versus play a broad selection of ninja styles. That overlap makes Ultimate Ninja 4 a transitional PS2 entry: it preserves the established Ultimate Ninja fighting foundation while introducing the time-skip setting, its characters and the first Japanese Accel-series identity.
