About

Higurashi no Naku koro ni Matsuri brings 07th Expansion’s rural horror mystery to PlayStation 2. Set in June 1983, it follows newcomer Keiichi Maebara as he settles into the seemingly quiet village of Hinamizawa. His school days quickly fill with games, jokes, and friendship alongside Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Hojo, Rika Furude, and Mion’s twin sister Shion. That warm routine is shadowed by the village’s Watanagashi festival, though: every year for four years, a murder and a disappearance have accompanied its arrival. When Keiichi begins asking questions, familiar faces and harmless details start to take on unnerving meanings.

Matsuri is a sound novel/visual novel: its drama unfolds through narrated text, dialogue, character imagery, music, and the PlayStation 2 version’s voiced performances. Rather than testing reflexes, it asks the player to read carefully, sit with incomplete information, and notice what changes from one telling to the next. Saving allows a chapter to be resumed, while optional tips supply fragments of local history and context outside the main scenes. The format makes its shifts in perspective especially important; a moment that seems straightforward from one character’s point of view can acquire a very different weight later.

The story is organized as a sequence of arcs that return to Hinamizawa and its core cast under altered circumstances. Early “question” arcs establish mysteries without immediately resolving them, while later material revisits the same world from other angles and turns clues into explanations. Keiichi remains a central viewpoint, but the narrative also gives other characters room to reveal their fears, loyalties, and secrets. The result is not a single linear investigation so much as a mosaic: each chapter supplies another piece, and the repeated setting lets the reader compare what is said, withheld, or remembered.

This PS2 release is a substantial console adaptation rather than a simple copy of the original PC episodes. It includes seven of the eight main arcs, omitting Matsuribayashi-hen, and adds three console-original routes: Taraimawashi-hen, Tsukiotoshi-hen, and Miotsukushi-hen. The latter provides an alternate conclusion in place of the missing original finale. Matsuri also uses new character art and professional Japanese voice acting, giving its interpretation of Hinamizawa a presentation tailored to the console. Some routes are unlocked by finishing earlier storylines, and the full conclusion calls for completing the available material and reading its tips.

Its horror works through contrast. Hinamizawa is introduced through club activities, teasing friendships, cicadas, and festival preparations, so the threat feels closer precisely because it intrudes on a place that initially seems ordinary. Keiichi’s uncertainty becomes the player’s uncertainty as rumor, suspicion, and memory pull the cast in conflicting directions. Rena’s cheerful intensity, Mion’s confidence, Shion’s guarded presence, Satoko’s bravado, and Rika’s strange composure all help make the group feel both close-knit and difficult to fully read. The mystery continually invites the question of whether the danger lies in the village, in the people around Keiichi, or in his own understanding of events.

Released in Japan for PS2 on February 22, 2007, Higurashi no Naku koro ni Matsuri was published by Alchemist; HuneX is credited for the console game’s development, while the underlying Higurashi work originated with 07th Expansion. For newcomers, it offers a self-contained route into the series’ cycle of friendship, fear, and deduction, while its alternate arcs and revised presentation make it a distinct version for readers already familiar with the PC story. Its persistent pleasure is in assembling the pattern: not merely learning what happened in Hinamizawa, but reconsidering how every account of it may have been shaped.
