About
Sniper Elite for PlayStation 2 is Rebellion Developments' 2005 World War II tactical shooter and the opening game in the Sniper Elite series. Set in Berlin during the final days of the war, it follows Karl Fairburne, a German-born American operative working for the Office of Strategic Services. Disguised in a German uniform, Fairburne enters a city contested by collapsing Nazi forces and advancing Soviet troops, with orders to keep German nuclear research, personnel, and technology out of Soviet hands. The PS2 release arrived in Europe in September 2005 and North America that October; its regional publishing credits vary, with MC2 France in Europe and Namco Hometek in North America, while Ubisoft handled European distribution.
Rather than treating every encounter as a direct firefight, Sniper Elite PS2 puts long-range observation and careful positioning at the center of its missions. Fairburne moves through damaged streets, rail facilities, military compounds, and other Berlin locations in a third-person view, while rifle aiming shifts to a first-person scope. The campaign asks him to infiltrate guarded areas, eliminate or protect specific targets, collect intelligence, sabotage equipment, and reach extraction points. A visibility indicator helps communicate how exposed he is, encouraging the player to use cover, distance, and a measured pace instead of charging through enemy patrols.
The rifle system accounts for conditions that can affect a shot. Bullet drop, wind, firing position, and Fairburne's breathing all matter when the game is configured for its more demanding ballistic behavior, so a distant target may require both adjustment and patience. Loud artillery or thunder can be used to cover a rifle report, while a wounded soldier can draw nearby enemies into view. Players can also make use of World War II firearms beyond sniper rifles, including pistols, submachine guns, machine guns, grenades, and anti-tank weaponry. Grenades may serve as tripwire traps, and accurate shots can trigger hazards such as fuel stores or enemy explosives.
A successful long-range hit can activate the original game's slow-motion bullet camera, following the round from the rifle toward its target. That feature sits alongside a broader stealth toolkit: stay concealed, plan an approach, and create opportunities before committing to a shot. The story moves through the Battle of Berlin while Fairburne contends with German holdouts, Soviet forces, and competing intelligence interests. Its central Cold War-era premise is fictional, but the game uses the 1945 setting to frame a race for Nazi scientific knowledge as Germany falls.
The PlayStation 2 version offers the main single-player campaign as well as local two-player cooperative play, allowing a second player to join the mission and revive a fallen partner. It also included competitive multiplayer options through the PS2's GameSpy support, with matches for up to eight players. These modes extend the same emphasis on sightlines, concealment, and the consequences of a missed shot beyond the solo campaign. The console edition is distinct from the later 2010 Wii release, which was developed by Raylight Studios and added motion-control features and a new level.
As the first Sniper Elite, this PS2 game established Karl Fairburne and the blend of third-person movement, scoped sniping, stealth, and ballistic calculation that Rebellion revisited in later entries. Its Berlin 1945 setting is sometimes reflected in the alternate title Sniper Elite: Berlin 1945. For players exploring the PlayStation 2 library, it is a mission-based tactical shooter built around scouting a route, controlling the range of an engagement, and making each rifle shot count.
