About

Shadow Hearts: Covenant for PlayStation 2 is a turn-based role-playing game released in North America in September 2004. Developed by Nautilus, the studio previously known as Sacnoth, it is the second main Shadow Hearts game and was published in North America by Midway Games. Japan received the game earlier in 2004 as Shadow Hearts II through Aruze, making Covenant the Western title for the same PS2 sequel rather than a separate installment. Its story blends an alternate-history World War I setting with occult fantasy, grotesque creatures, and deliberately offbeat humor.

The adventure resumes Yuri Hyuga’s story after the first Shadow Hearts. In 1915, German lieutenant Karin Koenig reaches the French town of Domrémy during the war and encounters Yuri, a Harmonixer able to take monstrous forms. Yuri is contending with a curse while a secret organization, Sapientes Gladio, exploits political turmoil and supernatural power for its own plans. Karin and Yuri become the center of a journey that moves through Europe, Russia, the Near East, and Japan, combining fictionalized historical figures and events with the series’ supernatural mythology.

Exploration is built around towns, dungeons, shops, conversations, treasure, and story scenes. Players assemble a varied traveling party, equip weapons and accessories, manage healing supplies, and pursue both the main route and optional activities. The game begins in a more directed fashion before opening up further later on, when extra locations and side content become available. That structure lets the party’s global itinerary support both the large-scale war backdrop and smaller character-focused detours.

Battles are turn-based, but actions hinge on the series’ Judgment Ring. A moving indicator circles a dial, and the player must stop it within marked zones to make an attack, spell, defensive choice, or item use succeed at full effectiveness. Accurate timing can strengthen an action, while missed targets can reduce or cancel it. The ring also appears in shops, where successful timing can affect buying and selling prices, so the mechanic reaches beyond combat rather than serving as a single battle minigame.

Party members have health, magic-related skill points, and sanity points that decline during combat; allowing sanity to run out sends a character berserk. Turn order is influenced by speed, while character growth, equipment, and assignable Crest magic shape the party’s options. Covenant also emphasizes coordinated attacks: compatible actions can be chained into combos, rewarding a succession of well-timed Judgment Ring inputs with escalating damage and a special finishing effect when the whole four-character battle team connects. Yuri’s Fusion ability remains central, allowing him to adopt different forms with their own strengths and abilities.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant uses the PlayStation 2’s two-disc format for a lengthy single-player RPG that balances a dramatic central quest with eccentric companions and comic interludes. Familiar faces return alongside newcomers including Karin, the flamboyant vampire wrestler Joachim Valentine, fortune teller Lucia, and Yuri’s Japanese cousin Kurando Inugami. The soundtrack features returning composer Yoshitaka Hirota with additional music by Yasunori Mitsuda, Kenji Ito, and Tomoko Kobayashi, while the English release received a dedicated localization and voice recording.

The PS2 game also differs in availability by region. The original Japanese release, Shadow Hearts II, later received a Director’s Cut edition with added and expanded material, but that version was separate from the 2004 North American Shadow Hearts: Covenant release. Covenant was followed by Shadow Hearts: From the New World in 2005, though its immediate role is as Yuri Hyuga’s direct continuation. For players seeking a period-set PS2 RPG with party customization, timing-based command execution, and a supernatural take on the First World War, it stands as the pivotal middle chapter of the Shadow Hearts series.
