About

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 for PlayStation 2 is a 2009 action role-playing game developed by n-Space and published by Activision. It is the second entry in the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series, following the 2006 game, and places a broad selection of Marvel heroes and villains in a comic-book conflict inspired by Secret War and Civil War. The PS2 edition arrived alongside versions for several other systems, but it is one of the releases created by n-Space rather than the separately developed PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 edition.

The adventure begins with an unauthorized mission led by Nick Fury into Latveria, then moves into a crisis that divides the superhero community. After destruction in Stamford drives the passage of the Superhuman Registration Act, players choose whether to support registration or join the resistance. Iron Man and Mister Fantastic lead the Pro-Registration cause, while Captain America and Luke Cage head the Anti-Registration side. That decision affects the course of the campaign, including missions and opponents, and leads to one of two outcomes after the central threat is resolved.

Combat is built around a four-character team selected from the game’s roster. Players guide the group through isometric action-RPG stages, using basic attacks, character powers, defensive moves, and items against crowds of enemies and larger bosses. Heroes gain experience and develop their abilities as the game progresses, while team members can be changed to suit a situation. The structure follows the accessible party-based action established by Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and the earlier X-Men Legends games, making team composition part of both combat and replaying the opposing story path.

Its signature addition is the Fusion system. Two heroes can combine compatible powers to produce a joint attack, turning familiar Marvel abilities into a cooperative move instead of treating each character as an entirely separate fighter. These combinations encourage experimenting with different lineups, whether pairing Captain America’s shield techniques with an elemental attack or selecting heroes whose powers complement a crowded battlefield. The game also supports multiplayer, allowing a group to assemble a four-hero squad and tackle the campaign together.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 on PS2 shares its core premise and Fusion attacks with the other console releases, but it belongs to n-Space’s version family with the Wii and Nintendo DS rather than the higher-definition PS3 and Xbox 360 build by Vicarious Visions. Its character-progression approach is closer to the earlier Ultimate Alliance style, and it does not use the alternate-costume system found in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. The PSP release was based on this n-Space version and ported by Savage Entertainment. For PS2 players, the game remains a self-contained Marvel team adventure whose branching Civil War choice gives its superhero campaign two perspectives.
