About

Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes on PlayStation 2 brings Capcom's exuberant crossover fighter to Sony's console. Developed and published by Capcom, this PS2 edition arrived in North America in November 2002 after the game's 2000 arcade and Dreamcast debut. It is the fourth Marvel vs. Capcom game, pitting a huge selection of Marvel Comics heroes and villains against fighters from Capcom series including Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Mega Man, Strider, and Resident Evil. Its presentation mixes hand-drawn character sprites with 3D stages and effects, keeping the focus on fast, colorful two-dimensional combat.

Each bout is a three-on-three contest. Players choose a squad from a roster of 56 characters, then face another team one fighter at a time. The active character can attack, jump, air-dash where applicable, block, throw, and perform special moves, while a teammate can be tagged in to replace them. The aim is to deplete the opposing side's full team health before time expires. Between appearances, sidelined teammates gradually recover a portion of their vitality, so changing fighters is both an offensive choice and a way to manage a damaged team.

The Variable System gives Marvel vs. Capcom 2 its constant movement. Two assist buttons call an off-screen teammate in for a selected supporting attack, allowing projectile cover, anti-air pressure, or other interruptions without surrendering control of the point character. Players can also force an opponent's current fighter out with a snapback, exposing another member of that team. Because assists can be hit, well-timed calls carry risk as well as opportunity. The four main attack buttons and two assist buttons replace the older series format of separate light, medium, and heavy punch and kick buttons.

Attacking and taking damage fill the Hyper Combo Gauge at the bottom of the screen. Meter can be spent on a character's powerful Hyper Combo, saved for delayed Hyper Combos that chain supers between teammates, or used for a Variable Combination that brings the whole team into the action. Those systems make team order, character compatibility, and meter management central to every round. The game also supports flashy aerial exchanges and lengthy combinations, with animated attacks often filling the screen while the background action continues behind them.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 includes Arcade, Versus, Training, and Score Attack modes. Arcade Mode asks a single player to defeat a succession of computer-controlled teams before confronting Abyss, a boss with multiple forms. Versus Mode lets two local players battle with their own squads, while Training Mode provides a place to practice moves and adjust settings. Score Attack uses arcade-style opposition and challenges the player to build a high score without continuing. Unlike several earlier fighting games, clearing Arcade Mode does not produce a unique ending for each chosen character team.

The PlayStation 2 release retains the console progression system that unlocks content through the Secret Factor menu. Points earned in normal play can be used to open additional fighters, stages, and color schemes; 24 characters are initially available in this version. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 follows Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and expands that predecessor's two-character format into three-person teams, creating a distinct entry in Capcom's long-running versus series. Its broad crossover cast also includes original Capcom creations Ruby Heart, Amingo, and SonSon alongside familiar comic-book and video-game characters.
