About
The King of Fighters '94 : Re-Bout is a PlayStation 2 fighting game from SNK Playmore, released in Japan on December 28, 2004 to mark the tenth anniversary of The King of Fighters. Rather than a new numbered entry, it revisits the 1994 game that launched SNK's crossover tournament series. Re-Bout packages an emulated version of the original alongside an enhanced Arrange version, preserving the early 3-on-3 format while presenting it with a substantially different visual and feature set.
The central contest remains a team elimination battle. Players select a three-fighter side, decide the order in which its members enter, and try to defeat every opponent before their own team is exhausted. Combat uses the series' four attack buttons for punches and kicks, with command inputs opening up each combatant's special techniques. A power gauge builds through defensive play and damage, and reaching the right condition enables stronger attacks and character-specific super moves. The result is a match where choosing an opening fighter, saving a favorable matchup, and managing momentum matter as much as winning an individual exchange.
Its roster is built around the original tournament's famous SNK all-star concept. Kyo Kusanagi leads the Japan Team, while familiar faces from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Psycho Soldier, and Ikari Warriors appear alongside characters created for King of Fighters. Terry and Andy Bogard, Ryo and Yuri Sakazaki, Mai Shiranui, Athena Asamiya, Ralf Jones, and Clark Still are among the returning SNK personalities represented in the teams. The tournament is organized by the dangerous Rugal Bernstein, giving the game's arcade progression a clear final challenge after the regional team battles.
Re-Bout's Arrange version changes the presentation most visibly. Character artwork was enlarged and smoothed for higher-resolution display, and the original stages were replaced with redesigned environments that incorporate 3D elements. Players can also choose the original game, making the release a direct comparison between the 1994 presentation and the anniversary update. Additional material includes a new animated opening and anniversary video content, while the soundtrack received rearranged music for the remake.
One of the most meaningful gameplay additions is Team Edit. The 1994 game asks players to use its preset national teams, but Re-Bout lets them assemble a custom three-person lineup, bringing the selection flexibility associated with later King of Fighters games to this first installment. The remake also makes Saisyu Kusanagi and Rugal Bernstein playable in applicable modes, expanding options beyond the original tournament roster. Local versus play supports two players, and the Japanese release originally included online matches through KDDI's Multi Matching BB service.
The King of Fighters '94 : Re-Bout is therefore both a remake and a snapshot of the series' foundation. Its deliberate three-person structure, crossover cast, and early SNK fighting-game mechanics remain intact, while Team Edit, bonus material, revised audio, and updated graphics recast them for PlayStation 2. For players interested in the opening chapter of The King of Fighters, the release offers the original game in the same package as a commemorative reinterpretation made specifically for the franchise's first decade.
