About
The Simpsons: Hit & Run turns Springfield into a lively, joke-packed action adventure built around its most recognizable streets, stores, landmarks, and residents. Developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Sierra for PlayStation 2, this 2003 release puts the animated series' humor at the center of a broad driving-and-exploration game. It mixes a mission-led structure with room to roam, smash objects, hunt secrets, and enjoy the many sight gags tucked around town.
A strange week before Halloween sends Springfield into a spiral of suspicious events. Surveillance-like wasp cameras appear everywhere, mysterious black vans prowl the roads, and Krusty's new Buzz Cola seems far more sinister than its cheerful marketing suggests. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Apu each investigate their own pieces of the mystery, eventually uncovering an alien scheme involving Kang and Kodos. The plot moves through familiar locations while giving the show's cast plenty of new banter and playful references.
The campaign spans seven levels across three versions of Springfield, with more than fifty missions that keep changing the objective. One assignment may ask for a frantic race, while the next becomes a pursuit, a timed delivery, a scavenger hunt, an escort, or a destructive dash through traffic. Clear guidance and quick restarts make the challenges easy to understand, but tight timers, stubborn opponents, and chaotic roads can make a clean run surprisingly demanding.
Driving is the heart of the experience. Characters can summon their selected vehicle at phone booths, borrow civilian cars, or discover hidden rides scattered through each level. The garage includes recognizable Simpsons machines such as Mr. Plow and the Canyonero alongside taxis, sedans, sports cars, and other Springfield oddities. Each vehicle has its own feel for speed, handling, toughness, and weight, so the best choice for a race is not always the most entertaining one for free-roaming trouble.
There is also plenty to do outside the car. On foot, each character can run, jump, kick, and smash through crates, vending machines, and other breakable scenery while speaking to mission givers and searching the environment. Reckless driving and destruction fill the Hit & Run meter, bringing police cars into pursuit if it reaches its limit. It is a comic version of street mayhem rather than a realistic crime game, with coins serving as the main penalty whenever the character is caught or takes a hard hit.
Collectibles reward players who look beyond the mission markers. Coins come from breakable objects and wasp cameras, then pay for cars and costumes, including items needed to progress. Every level also hides seven collector cards. Finding a complete set unlocks a course for the bonus racing game, while gathering all forty-nine cards leads to an extra Itchy & Scratchy reward. Vehicle races, time trials, shortcuts, hidden cars, outfits, and the urge to improve mission times give each neighborhood a reason to revisit it.
The PlayStation 2 release preserves the same third-person, sandbox-style campaign that made the game a standout Simpsons adaptation of its era. Its Springfield is divided into compact, busy zones rather than one seamless city, a design that keeps mission starts, landmarks, and character encounters close at hand. The licensed presentation matters just as much as the layout: the recognizable cast voices the characters, and the dialogue gives the game the rhythm of an extended, interactive episode.
After enough collector cards have been found, the unlockable Bonus Game adds split-screen multiplayer racing for up to four players. That extra mode is separate from the story, but it makes the cars and courses useful long after the campaign missions are complete. Whether played for the alien-conspiracy story, the vehicle chaos, the collectibles, or a couch race with friends, The Simpsons: Hit & Run on PS2 offers a densely packed tour of Springfield with a distinctly mischievous sense of humor.
