About

Sly 2: Band of Thieves for PlayStation 2 is a 2004 stealth action-adventure from Sucker Punch Productions, published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the second Sly Cooper game, following Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, and turns the series' comic-book presentation into a globe-spanning caper. The story begins after the mechanical owl Clockwerk has been defeated: his remains have disappeared from police custody, and Sly Cooper, Bentley, and Murray set out to recover the pieces before the Klaww Gang can use them to restore their enemy.

Rather than moving through a single linear run of stages, the Cooper Gang works from large mission hubs that represent places such as Paris, Prague, India, and the Canadian wilderness. Each operation is assembled like a heist. The crew first scouts a target, steals equipment or information, disrupts defenses, and completes other preparatory jobs before attempting the main score. Safe houses serve as the gang's base in each area, giving players a place to select jobs, change characters, and spend the money collected in the field.

Sly remains the group's agile thief. His hooked cane is used for acrobatic traversal, quiet attacks, and lifting coins or valuables from unsuspecting guards. Rooftops, cables, ledges, pipes, and narrow platforms turn the cities and compounds into routes for staying out of sight. Patrols and hazards make awareness important, but the PlayStation 2 game gives characters health bars rather than ending a mission at the first mistake. This lets a stealthy approach coexist with recoveries after an alarm or a rough landing.

Bentley and Murray are fully playable partners rather than occasional helpers. Bentley brings planning and technical skills to jobs, using gadgets such as sleep darts, bombs, and hacking equipment when a mission calls for sabotage or infiltration. Murray supplies the gang's muscle, able to fight, carry, and throw objects or enemies while handling heavy-duty tasks. Their contrasting abilities mean the game shifts between platforming, stealth, brawling, driving, computer-related challenges, and coordinated setups; some missions also ask the three friends to combine their skills directly.

Exploration has a practical reward. Sly can pickpocket guards and recover valuables to sell, while scattered clue bottles reveal combinations for hidden safes. Finding those safes opens special upgrades, and earned coins can be used through the safe-house ThiefNet store to buy additional moves and power-ups for the crew. These additions tailor the gang's approach: Sly's purchases lean toward mobility and stealth, Bentley's toward technology, and Murray's toward force. The result is a single-player campaign with optional collecting and character development woven into the heist structure.

The animated, cel-shaded look gives the game a stylized crime-cartoon identity, while the plot pairs the gang's pursuit of Clockwerk parts with Interpol inspector Carmelita Fox and newcomer Constable Neyla. The Klaww Gang's members use individual pieces in their own criminal operations, so each region has a different target, visual setting, and criminal scheme. That framing supplies a clear series connection without requiring familiarity with every detail of the first adventure: Sly's family history and Clockwerk's threat explain the stakes, while the three-person crew supplies the changing play styles.

Sly 2: Band of Thieves was originally released in North America on September 14, 2004, as a PlayStation 2 exclusive. Its larger hubs and three-character heists marked a substantial expansion of the first game’s format, and Sucker Punch followed it with Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves in 2005. The original PlayStation 2 version later appeared in The Sly Collection, and Sony made a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 conversion available in 2024 with modern convenience features such as up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and video filters. The PS2 original remains the version that established this team-based heist design for the series.
