About

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition for PlayStation 2 is Capcom's expanded 2006 version of the third main Devil May Cry game. This single-player action adventure serves as a prequel to the original game, following a younger Dante before his demon-hunting business takes its familiar name. A demonic assault and a message from his twin brother Vergil draw him toward the colossal Temen-ni-gru tower, where family history, rival ambitions, and a threat to the human world collide.

The campaign is organized into missions that mix fast, close-range combat with exploration, light platforming, occasional puzzles, and demanding boss encounters. Dante can carry two melee weapons and two firearms at once, swapping between the equipped choices during battle. Defeated enemies yield red orbs for purchases and upgrades, while each mission evaluates performance according to factors including time, combat style, damage, item use, and orb collection. The result is a game built around learning enemy behavior and turning a growing move set into longer, cleaner encounters.

Dante's Style system is central to Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition PS2 play. At the start of a mission or at a checkpoint, players select a Style that emphasizes evasion, sword techniques, gunplay, or defensive counters. Trickster supports mobility, Swordmaster expands melee options, Gunslinger develops firearm moves, and Royalguard rewards precise blocking. Further styles become available as the story advances, and the Devil Trigger gauge eventually lets Dante assume a more powerful demonic form. Weapons and styles gain abilities over time, giving return visits to earlier missions a different feel.

The Special Edition retains the tower-spanning story of Dante, Vergil, Arkham, and Lady while adding a separate playable Vergil mode. Vergil's weapon set, summoned swords, and Dark Slayer style make his route mechanically distinct from Dante's, even though it revisits the game's stages and enemies. Capcom also added the Bloody Palace survival challenge, a Turbo Mode that raises game speed, a Very Hard difficulty, a Demo Digest for revisiting scenes, an International Mode, and new fights with Jester. Its revised continue options and adjusted difficulty settings broaden the ways to approach a game known for its intense encounters.

As a PlayStation 2 release, Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition captures a major early chapter in Capcom's character-action series. The 2005 original established the younger, more impulsive Dante and the rivalry with Vergil that informs the first game's backstory; this 2006 rerelease packages that campaign with additions designed for repeat play. Later versions appeared on other platforms and in the Devil May Cry HD Collection, but the PS2 Special Edition is the edition that introduced Vergil as a playable character and the other console-specific enhancements that distinguish it from the initial release.
