About

Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 single-player action-adventure from Team Ico, the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio group led by director Fumito Ueda, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in Japan as Wanda and the Colossus, it sends the young Wander across the desolate Forbidden Land with the body of Mono, a girl he hopes to restore to life. At the Shrine of Worship, the mysterious Dormin offers a bargain: destroy the sixteen giant colossi scattered through the land, and Mono may return. The result is a PS2 adventure built around a strikingly focused premise rather than towns, ordinary enemies, or a conventional stream of dungeons.

Each journey begins at the shrine. Wander can raise his Ancient Sword in sunlight, using its reflected beam to point toward the next colossus, then travel there on foot or aboard his horse Agro. The terrain includes ravines, lakes, ruins, desert stretches, and high stone structures, so reaching a target is part of the challenge. Wander carries only a sword and bow, and the bow can distract or provoke some creatures, but the central task is observation. Players look for a route onto each enormous opponent, whether that means using the arena, riding alongside it, finding a ledge, or waiting for an opening.

The battles combine platforming, environmental puzzles, and close-range combat. Once Wander climbs a colossus, he can grip its fur and protrusions while it moves and attempts to shake him loose. His stamina limits how long he can hold on, making each ascent a balance between finding a safe position and reaching the glowing sigils that mark weak points. Thrusting the sword into those marks drains the creature's strength, but many encounters demand a different solution before Wander can get close. Some take place on open ground, while others make use of water, height, structures, or Agro's ability to carry Wander at speed.

Shadow of the Colossus PS2 tells its story with sparse dialogue and a largely unpopulated world. Wander, Mono, Agro, Dormin, and the pursuing shaman Lord Emon carry the narrative, while the changing appearance of Wander and the collapsing idols at the shrine track the cost of his quest. The colossi are the game's only hostile foes, and their animal-like, humanoid, airborne, and aquatic forms make each fight a separate puzzle. Between battles, the quiet travel and the use of wind, water, and landscape sounds give the Forbidden Land an intentionally isolated character. After completing the main journey, Time Attack challenges let players revisit colossus encounters under time limits and unlock bonus items.

The PlayStation 2 release followed Ico and is commonly treated as a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel. Its scale-focused boss design and partnership between Wander and Agro distinguish it from more typical action games of its period. The original later returned in the 2011 Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection for PlayStation 3, where Bluepoint Games provided an HD remaster, and Bluepoint and Japan Studio created a PlayStation 4 remake released in 2018. Those later versions preserve the core journey, but Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 remains the original form of Wander's sixteen-colossus expedition.
