About

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 for PlayStation 2 is a 2002 skateboarding game developed by Neversoft and published by Activision. The fourth main entry in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series keeps the fast, score-driven skating that defined its predecessors while making its PS2 environments far more open to explore. Players select a professional skater or build a custom rider, then take to locations inspired by places such as a college campus, San Francisco, Alcatraz and a cruise ship. It is a single-player career game at its core, with local multiplayer and PlayStation 2 online options expanding the ways to skate.

The central change is the Career mode's lack of a running two-minute clock. Instead of rushing through a fixed list of goals, the skater can roam each level freely and approach people who offer individual challenges. Those assignments range from score and combo targets to collecting objects, completing stunts and helping characters around the stage. Finishing goals earns cash and advances the career, while pro-specific challenges provide another step toward completion. This structure preserves the series' focus on repeated practice and cleaner, higher-scoring runs, but lets players choose when to attempt a task.

Movement on the PlayStation 2 uses the familiar combination of board control, jumps, grinds, manuals and aerial tricks. Linking these actions without bailing builds a combo, so a line may travel from a ramp to a rail, through a manual across the ground, and into another trick before the landing banks the score. The game includes special tricks and expanded ways to vary grinds and lip tricks. It also adds the spine transfer, allowing a skater to move between back-to-back quarter-pipes, and skitching, which lets the player grab onto a moving vehicle. These additions are useful both for navigating the larger spaces and for extending a scoring line.

The career is built around a roster of real professional skateboarders, with Tony Hawk as its namesake, alongside unlockable fictional and guest characters. Each skater has attributes and a trick setup that can be developed as the game progresses. Creating a custom skater offers a separate route through the game's goals, while the park editor lets players make their own skate spaces and use them for practice or multiplayer. The stages are not simply contest courses: they are themed playgrounds filled with ramps, rails, transitions, pedestrians, vehicles and mission-giving characters, rewarding players who learn the layout as well as the scoring system.

Multiplayer on the PS2 includes competitive modes such as Trick Attack, Graffiti, Combo Mambo, King of the Hill and Slap, as well as Free Skate. In Trick Attack, players chase the highest total score; Graffiti turns skateable objects into territory that opponents can take with a better trick; and Combo Mambo emphasizes the value of one uninterrupted sequence. The PlayStation 2 release also supported online rooms for as many as eight players when using a broadband connection, and team-based play was available. That made it one of the series' early console entries to carry its competitive score play beyond a shared screen.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 arrived after Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and before the series moved into Tony Hawk's Underground. Its free-roaming, goal-giver approach points toward the more story-led progression that Neversoft would explore in later Tony Hawk games, even though this installment still centers on the board and the score. The original PlayStation 2 game should not be confused with the separately developed PlayStation version or the later releases for other platforms, which differ in content and construction. For PS2 players, it stands as the 2002 console version that blended classic combo skating with a more flexible career format.
