About
Killer7 for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 action-adventure game from Grasshopper Manufacture and Capcom, published by Capcom. Directed and written by Goichi Suda, also known as Suda51, it places players in a stylized alternate-world thriller where international peace has given way to attacks by the deadly Heaven Smile terrorists. The story follows the killer7, an elite group of assassins whose identities are connected to the enigmatic Harman Smith. Rather than presenting a conventional crime story, the game unfolds through missions, conversations, and surreal encounters that gradually reveal its political and personal conflicts.
Play unfolds along fixed routes through each location. Players move a chosen assassin forward or turn around at designated points, then select a branch when the route divides. This deliberate movement system makes exploration about reading the environment and choosing a path, while combat changes to a first-person aiming view. Heaven Smiles often announce themselves with unnerving laughter before they become visible; scanning an area reveals them, and precise shots can cripple limbs or strike a critical point. Keeping enemies at a distance matters, because a nearby Smile can detonate and injure the active character.
The seven playable Smith personas give Killer7 its defining tactical variety. The group includes Garcian, Dan, Kaede, Kevin, Coyote, Con, and Mask de Smith, and each has a different firearm and special ability. Players can switch among available members from the menu, using the appropriate assassin to solve character-specific obstacles as well as to approach combat differently. If a persona falls, Garcian can recover the character's head to restore them; losing Garcian ends the mission. Defeated enemies supply blood that supports recovery and abilities, while thicker blood can be exchanged at Harman's Room checkpoints for serum used to strengthen the assassins.
The PS2 game mixes shooting with puzzle-solving and a chapter-based assassination structure. Missions send the killer7 through buildings, roads, schools, and other strange settings while the team accepts work arranged through Christopher Mills. Items such as rings can open the way through particular puzzles, and not every persona is necessarily available at the beginning of a mission. The result is a single-player game where route choices, the selected assassin, aim, item use, and careful observation all matter. Its sharply graphic visual presentation, voice-led scenes, and deliberately fragmented storytelling distinguish it from more straightforward shooters of its era.
Killer7 arrived in Japan in June 2005 and in North America in July, appearing on PlayStation 2 alongside its GameCube release. It began as one of Capcom's planned GameCube-focused projects before reaching both systems. The PlayStation 2 version preserves the unusual assassin-switching structure and the story of Harman Smith's organization, making it a notable early collaboration between Capcom and Grasshopper Manufacture. Players who finish the main game can unlock the tougher Killer8 mode, which adds Young Harman alongside the original seven personalities, followed by the playful Hopper7 bonus mode.
