About

Star Wars: Battlefront II on PlayStation 2 is Pandemic Studios' 2005 action shooter for LucasArts and the direct follow-up to 2004's Star Wars: Battlefront. Set across the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War, it puts large infantry clashes, vehicles, starfighters, and familiar locations from the films into battles that can be viewed from first- or third-person perspective. The PS2 release arrived in North America in November 2005, bringing the series' faction-based combat to a broader range of eras, maps, and modes.

Most ground battles revolve around command posts and reinforcements. Players select a side appropriate to the era, then spawn as an infantry unit and work to seize and hold key positions or reduce the opposing force's reinforcements. Each faction has four shared role types—Infantry, Heavy, Sniper, and Engineer—alongside two faction-specific special units that become available after earning enough points. This creates a clear rhythm of spawning, capturing territory, using weapons or vehicles suited to the situation, and changing roles as a battle develops. The sequel also adds sprinting and a forward roll to its soldier movement.

The game expands the battlefield beyond ground warfare. Players can pilot vehicles and, in Space Assault matches, fly starfighters against an enemy capital ship. Victory can come from dogfighting and scoring points, but pilots can also target important ship systems from outside or land in the opposing hangar to sabotage them from within. On selected maps, successful play can unlock a faction's hero, allowing control of a powerful Star Wars character for a limited time. Mos Eisley's Hero Assault mode centers the conflict on heroes and villains, turning the map into a team deathmatch built around those characters.

Its single-player Rise of the Empire campaign gives the action a continuous viewpoint through the experiences of the 501st Legion. The missions begin with the Clone Wars at Geonosis, follow the legion's transition from Republic clone troops to Imperial forces, and continue through battles associated with the original trilogy, ending at Hoth. Rather than simply presenting disconnected skirmishes, the campaign uses its veteran narrator and objectives to link its ground and space encounters into a story of the Republic's fall and the Empire's rise.

Instant Action lets players set up individual matches across the game's locations and choose from Conquest, Hunt, Capture the Flag, Hero Assault, and Space Assault where available. Conquest remains the central territorial mode, while Hunt changes the sides and goals around a planet's native inhabitants. Capture the Flag variants introduce a different objective, and the selection of Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War factions lets the same basic framework support battles between the Republic and Confederacy or the Rebels and Empire.

Star Wars: Battlefront II PS2 also includes Galactic Conquest, a strategic layer in which players move fleets between planets before fighting the resulting engagements. Strong performances earn credits that can be spent on reinforcements, new classes, fleet upgrades, and other support. The PlayStation 2 version supports local split-screen play, including cooperative and competitive Galactic Conquest battles, making its campaign-scale warfare and quick standalone matches suited to both solo and shared sessions. As a 2005 sequel, it is notable for combining the original Battlefront's accessible large-scale format with heroes and objective-driven space combat.
