About

Rozen Maiden: Duellwalzer is a Japanese PlayStation 2 adventure game from Taito, based on Peach-Pit's Rozen Maiden manga and the first television anime series. The original standard and limited editions arrived in Japan on April 27, 2006, while the version represented by the 2007 release date was later reissued in the TAITO BEST budget line. Duellwalzer places players in the role of Jun Sakurada, the isolated boy whose encounter with the living doll Shinku pulls him into the Rozen Maidens' strange world.

The PS2 game's story uses the premise of the first anime as its foundation but adds its own developments. Rozen, a master dollmaker, created the sentient Rozen Maidens and gave each one a Rosa Mystica. The dolls are drawn into the Alice Game, a contest in which collecting the Rosa Mysticas offers the chance to become the perfect doll Alice. Jun becomes Shinku's medium, a human partner who supplies her with power, and is forced to confront the consequences of this conflict rather than remain shut away from the world.

Duellwalzer is structured around an adventure-game format. As Jun, the player reads scenes, follows events with the dolls, and chooses responses at important moments. These decisions affect the trust built with characters including Shinku, Hinaichigo, and Suiseiseki. Raising that trust is central to preparing for the Alice Game, giving conversations and character events a direct place in the game's progress. A text-history feature lets players review earlier dialogue when considering later choices.

Taito presented the game as a single-player, fully voiced adaptation. Alongside its story sequences, it includes original animated scenes, a gallery mode, and a roulette feature based on the fictional Detective Kun Kun puppet program from the anime. Those additions make Duellwalzer more than a straight retelling: it is a character-focused branch of the Rozen Maiden setting designed around spending time with its dolls and steering Jun through their conflicts.

The game was released only for PlayStation 2 in Japan. Taito issued both a regular edition and a limited edition, the latter packaged with a Shinku-themed pocket watch; the later TAITO BEST edition made the same adventure available at a lower price. Rozen Maiden: Duellwalzer was followed on PS2 by Taito's Rozen Maiden: Gebetgarten, but it remains the series' first console game and an adaptation specifically tied to the early anime era.
