About

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 - Collector's Edition for PlayStation 2 is the European re-release of Dimps' 3D fighting game, published by Bandai in 2005. It builds on the 2004 PS2 original, placing the characters and battles of Dragon Ball at the center of a fast, arena-based one-on-one fighter. The roster draws from Dragon Ball Z while also reaching into Dragon Ball films and Dragon Ball GT, allowing familiar heroes, rivals, and villains to meet in matchups that the source stories could never stage.

A fight blends close-range punches, kicks, guards, throws, evasive movement, and ki attacks. Players manage their fighter's energy while deciding when to pressure an opponent, escape, charge ki, or commit to a signature technique. Transformations and character-specific moves make combatants play differently, while flying lets fighters take battles vertically rather than remaining confined to the ground. Dramatic super attacks recreate abilities associated with the series, and the Dragon Rush mechanic turns a successful opening into a quick sequence in which both players try to outguess one another.

The principal single-player mode, Dragon Universe, presents story routes for selected characters on a world map. Players fly across the map to find battles and events, following major Dragon Ball Z arcs while also uncovering optional encounters and alternate paths. This structure makes progression more exploratory than a simple succession of fights: searching the map and meeting particular conditions can lead to new opponents, capsules, and unlocks. Completing routes broadens the selection of characters, transformations, and other content available elsewhere in the game.

Capsules provide a further layer of preparation. Before a match, players can equip abilities, techniques, transformations, and support effects within their available capacity, then tailor a fighter to a preferred strategy. Practice and training options offer space to learn inputs and timing, while the World Tournament supplies bracket-style competition. Local versus play remains the direct way to test prepared characters against another player, and the Dragon Arena gives fully developed fighters another setting in which to battle and exchange character data through passwords.

The Collector's Edition is important because it is not a new sequel or a compilation; it is a PAL PlayStation 2 edition of Budokai 3 with additions that had been associated with the Japanese release. Alongside the underlying game, it lets players select Japanese character voices and includes extra alternate costumes for Goku, Piccolo, and Trunks, plus additional video unlockables. Those changes distinguish it from the earlier European release while preserving the same core modes, combat system, and Dragon Universe campaign.

As the third entry in the Budokai line, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 - Collector's Edition represents the series' PS2-era approach to Dragon Ball combat: focused 3D fighting arenas, customisable move sets, and a large range of material from across the franchise. Its mixture of story-led exploration, tournament play, training, and local multiplayer gives the Collector's Edition more to offer than a straight series of exhibition matches, while its language and costume options make this European version a notable variant for players interested in the original PS2 release.
