About
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is a 2001 action role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms world of Dungeons & Dragons. Developed by Snowblind Studios for PlayStation 2, it brought the Baldur's Gate name to consoles with a self-contained adventure focused on real-time combat and dungeon exploration.
Players choose one of three heroes: Kromlech, a dwarven fighter; Vahn, a human archer; or Adrianna, an elven sorceress. Each character has a distinct approach to battle, from close-range weapon attacks to archery and elemental magic, and earns experience that can be spent on new spells, feats, and attributes.
The story begins in the city of Baldur's Gate, where the party is drawn into an investigation of attacks linked to Xantam's Guild. Their journey carries them through sewers and crypts, into the Sunset Mountains, and eventually toward the Marsh of Chelimber as they uncover a wider threat to the city.
Combat unfolds in a rotatable three-quarter 3D view, with breakable scenery, traps, monsters, and loot scattered through the game's environments. Weapons, armor, consumable items, and gold support a steady progression as tougher enemies and bosses appear later in the quest.
Dark Alliance also supports two-player local cooperative play on a shared screen. The two adventurers fight through the same campaign together, combining their character abilities while sharing the challenges of each area.
The PlayStation 2 release was followed by versions for other platforms, but this original console edition established the Dark Alliance style of accessible action role-playing. Its blend of Dungeons & Dragons character advancement, fantasy adventure, and cooperative play made it one of the early console entries in the Baldur's Gate series.
