About
Resident Evil Survivor 2: Code: Veronica is a first-person shooting spin-off of Capcom’s Resident Evil series. Known in Japan as Gun Survivor 2: Biohazard Code: Veronica, it is the second Gun Survivor game and draws its characters, settings and creatures from Resident Evil – Code: Veronica rather than continuing that game’s survival-horror format. The story returns Claire Redfield and Steve Burnside to Umbrella’s Rockfort Island, recasting the familiar setting as a fast, score-conscious shooting challenge.
The game began in arcades as Gun Survivor 2: Biohazard Code: Veronica, a Capcom and Namco production released in Japan in July 2001. Its PlayStation 2 edition followed in Japan on 8 November 2001; Capcom released it in Europe on 8 February 2002 under the Resident Evil Survivor 2 title. It did not receive a North American PS2 release. The console version is therefore closely tied to the arcade project, but adds its own home-focused content and control options.
On PlayStation 2, the action is viewed from the protagonist’s eyes. Players may use a standard controller or a compatible light gun, including Namco’s GunCon 2; Capcom’s own PS2 support material documents the game’s GunCon 2 use and its CRT television requirements. This makes the PS2 release a genuine light-gun shooter when the peripheral is available, while remaining playable as a controller-based first-person game.
Arcade Mode supplies the direct escape scenario: Claire or Steve fights through areas of Rockfort Island, searches for the way forward and confronts major enemies. The game stresses movement as well as aiming, so it is not simply an on-rails gallery shooter. Weapons include familiar firearms such as handguns, shotguns, assault rifles and magnums, with further equipment available through progress and unlocks.
The PS2 edition also includes Dungeon Mode, a mission-based alternative built around enemy encounters, objectives and score building. A ranking mode records performance, while additional characters, equipment and secret options provide reasons to replay. Together, these modes give the release a more expansive single-player package than its arcade counterpart, even though its structure remains compact and arcade-influenced.
Resident Evil Survivor 2: Code: Veronica is best understood as a reinterpretation of Code: Veronica, not a replacement for it. It borrows Claire, Steve, Rockfort Island and monsters from that adventure, then turns those elements into first-person action shaped by timers, combat efficiency and repeat attempts. Its connection to the original arcade game and its Japan-and-Europe-only PS2 distribution make it an unusual branch of both the Resident Evil and Gun Survivor lines.
