About

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is Capcom’s 1996 competitive puzzle game for the CPS2 arcade system. This European build, dated 960529, is an export revision of the arcade game released internationally as Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo; the Japanese arcade release used the title Super Puzzle Fighter II X. Although its presentation cheerfully borrows the language of Capcom fighting games, the contest takes place in two gem-filled playfields. Two players race to turn careful placements into attacks that overwhelm the opponent’s board.

Each falling piece is a pair of colored gems, which can be moved and rotated before they land. Ordinary gems join to matching neighbors, but they do not vanish merely by touching. A same-colored Crash Gem is needed to break a connected group, making every placement a choice between preparing a future detonation and preventing the well from becoming too crowded. Square or rectangular formations can fuse into larger Power Gems, giving players an incentive to build compact structures that will produce a much greater payoff when shattered.

Breaking gems sends Counter Gems to the opposing side. These nuisance pieces initially carry countdown values before becoming ordinary gems, and a player can cancel incoming trouble by triggering a chain of their own. That interaction turns the game’s straightforward controls into a head-to-head contest of timing: a small clear can disrupt an opponent’s plan, while a prepared sequence may reverse an attack and send the pressure back. Diamond pieces provide another tactical tool by clearing gems of the color they touch. A round ends when a player’s rising stack reaches the danger point at the top of the field.

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo frames these exchanges with super-deformed Capcom characters and comic-book-like bouts. Fighters drawn from Street Fighter and Darkstalkers appear beside characters such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Sakura, Morrigan, Donovan, Felicia, and Hsien-Ko, while additional fighters can be encountered through the game’s options and progression. Their animated attacks illustrate the strength of an outgoing Counter Gem assault, but the puzzle rules—not special-move inputs—decide the match. The arcade format supports solo play against computer opponents as well as the central two-player versus competition.

The European 960529 release is a regional arcade revision, not a separate remake or a home-console mode variant. It runs on Capcom’s CP System II hardware and preserves the original coin-operated structure, rapid rematches, and compact competitive rules. Later ports and rereleases expanded the game’s availability and, in some cases, added or altered modes, but this arcade edition is the core 1996 design: a colorful one-on-one puzzle battle where arranging gems, saving Crash Gems, countering incoming blocks, and recognizing a chain at the right moment are the route to victory.
