About

Maya the Bee: Garden Adventures for Game Boy Color is a 2000 action-adventure based on the Maya the Bee animated property. Developed by Neon Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment, it was released in PAL territories on 17 November 2000. The European cartridge is a single-player game with selectable English, French, German and Spanish text; its German title is Die Biene Maja: Auf der Klatschmohnwiese, while the French release is known as Maya L'Abeille: Aventures dans la prairie.

Players guide Maya through Corn-Poppy Meadow after her friend Willi is taken by hostile hornets. The quest is built around helping the insects and other inhabitants Maya encounters, then using what she finds to open the way forward. Rather than sending the player through a sequence of purely action-led stages, Garden Adventures repeatedly turns progression into small problems: locate a requested object, carry it to the right character or place, and use it to gain access to a new area. Maya can hold only one item at a time, making each errand part of the route through the meadow and its surrounding dangers.

The Game Boy Color adventure is viewed from above and uses direct movement across connected screens. The D-pad moves Maya, while the A button is used for interaction and for taking flight. Flying consumes nectar, so it is a limited resource rather than a permanent shortcut, but it lets Maya cross or avoid hazards such as water, pits, spikes and webs. Nectar pickups replenish the supply. An on-screen question-mark prompt signals when Maya is close enough to speak with a character, inspect an object or use the item she is carrying, giving young players a clear cue for the adventure's context-sensitive actions.

Maya also has a simple defensive tool for exploring hazardous territory. Pressing B throws pollen, which temporarily immobilizes an enemy and can create a safe route past it. Pollen is finite but can be replenished by finding more around the game world. Health is represented by sections of a honeycomb: contact with enemies or environmental obstacles removes a section and returns Maya to the start of the current screen, while honeycomb pickups restore health. These systems make conserving nectar, pollen and health important when travelling through more dangerous locations, including the hornets' nest.

Garden Adventures is distinct from the 1999 Game Boy Color title Maya the Bee & Her Friends and from later Maya games on Game Boy Advance and other systems. Its modest handheld presentation combines item-based puzzles, exploration and light combat within a rescue story centered on Maya and Willi. Passwords allow progress to be resumed after a game over, fitting an adventure designed for short portable sessions while still asking players to remember the people, objects and routes that connect Corn-Poppy Meadow to the hornets' stronghold.
