About

The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning for Game Boy Advance is a 2006 single-player action-platform game that launches the Legend of Spyro branch of the series. Released under the Sierra Entertainment label by Vivendi Universal Games, the GBA edition was developed by Big Ant Studios with Krome Studios credited for additional development. It adapts the rebooted origin story shared with the same-named console release, but delivers it as a 2D, side-scrolling adventure built for Nintendo's handheld.

The story begins with Ignitus, guardian of fire, saving a purple dragon egg when the Dark Master's forces attack the Dragon Temple. The hatchling is raised in a swamp by dragonflies and grows up beside Sparx, believing that he belongs with their family. Once an attack reveals Spyro's ability to breathe fire, he learns that he is a dragon and sets out with Sparx to discover where he came from. That journey brings him to Ignitus and into a war against the army commanded by the dark dragon Cynder.

The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning Game Boy Advance follows Spyro through linear side-view stages that combine platforming, enemy encounters, hazards, and boss fights. Spyro can strike at close range with physical attacks and charge into opponents, while elemental breath gives him ways to engage foes from a distance. The early fire power is joined during the quest by electricity, ice, and earth, so the move set grows alongside the story instead of being available all at once.

Its controls make that elemental toolkit central to play. The R Button produces a sustained breath stream, and the L Button launches a ranged elemental attack. Building the purple Fury Meter enables a stronger technique when L and R are pressed together, giving combat a more powerful option after enough action. The design places a greater share of attention on fighting than the exploration-led 3D Spyro games that came before it, while still using jumps, routes, and platform obstacles to move each stage forward.

Spyro's main goal is to reach and rescue the guardian dragons held by Cynder's forces. Each rescue advances the plot and expands his elemental abilities, while the wider conflict explains why the guardians' powers matter to the Dark Master's plan. Sparx remains Spyro's companion throughout the adventure, and Cynder is more than a distant villain: the story gradually reveals her connection to the prophecy surrounding the purple dragon and the fate of the dragon realm.

The GBA version also varies its pace with flying sequences that play like compact scrolling shooters, asking Spyro to take to the air rather than traverse a standard platforming route. Small diversions, including a whack-a-mole-style minigame, sit alongside the campaign's combat and traversal. These features distinguish the handheld release's 2D structure from the console game's action-adventure presentation while retaining its characters, elemental theme, and central confrontation.

As the first chapter of The Legend of Spyro trilogy, A New Beginning established a new continuity for Spyro rather than continuing the tone and setup of the earlier PlayStation adventures. Its ending resolves the immediate battle with Cynder but leaves the larger threat unresolved, leading into The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night. For players looking for a Game Boy Advance Spyro adventure with a story-driven fantasy setting, elemental attacks, and a platform-game perspective, this release is a distinct handheld interpretation of that trilogy's opening.
