About
Bubble Bobble: Old & New is a Game Boy Advance version of Taito’s enduring single-screen platform action game. Released in North America in 2004 by Empire Interactive, it brings the arcade original to Nintendo’s handheld while presenting two selectable takes on the same adventure. The cartridge is built around the classic Cave of Monsters quest, starring the bubble-blowing dragon brothers Bub and Bob as they fight through a long series of compact enemy-filled rooms.
The essential Bubble Bobble rhythm is simple to understand but demanding to master. A player moves, jumps, and blows bubbles to catch the creatures scattered around each stage. Trapped enemies must then be popped before they escape, turning into food and other score items when they fall. Bubbles are not merely projectiles: they can float upward, be used as temporary platforms, and open routes to foes or bonuses that would otherwise be out of reach. Special bubbles and pickup items add attacks and advantages, while the last surviving enemy and prolonged stages become increasingly dangerous.
Old & New retains the original game’s 100 levels and its distinctive mix of action, positioning, score chasing, and arcade pressure. Each room is a self-contained challenge with wraparound paths in appropriate stages, making knowledge of enemy behavior and the layout as important as quick reactions. The game rewards players who learn when to turn a bubble into a stepping stone, when to trigger a chain of popped enemies, and when to take a safer route. Its escalating difficulty preserves the character of the 1986 design instead of reshaping it into a modern platformer.
The title’s two modes clarify its purpose. Old mode is the faithful, retro-styled version of the arcade game, while New mode applies refreshed visuals, remixed music, enhanced sound effects, and occasional voice samples to the same levels and mechanics. New mode is an audiovisual reinterpretation rather than a sequel with a different campaign, so veterans can revisit the familiar Cave of Monsters and newcomers can choose the presentation they prefer. The GBA adaptation also uses display scaling and a switchable horizontal or vertical view to make the large arcade playfields workable on a smaller handheld screen.
Cooperative play remains central to the appeal. Bub and Bob can tackle the cave together, coordinating bubble traps, using each other’s platforms, and clearing enemies more efficiently than a solo player can. The Game Boy Advance release supports two players with one cartridge for the classic mode, while two cartridges allow cooperative play in the enhanced presentation. Battery-backed saving preserves high scores and progress-related data, a useful convenience for a game whose later rooms and hidden techniques reward repeated attempts.
Bubble Bobble: Old & New is therefore both a portable arcade conversion and a compact historical package for one of Taito’s best-known games. Its bright character designs, deceptively strategic bubble mechanic, collectible rewards, and cooperative chaos still give every screen a clear objective. Players looking for a classic 2D platformer with short stages, demanding enemy patterns, and an emphasis on replayable arcade mastery will find that this Game Boy Advance edition keeps the original’s identity intact while offering a more contemporary audiovisual option.
