About

Donkey Kong Country 3 for Game Boy Advance brings Rare’s third Donkey Kong Country platform adventure to Nintendo’s handheld. Published by Nintendo in 2005, this version revisits the story and side-scrolling action of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!, originally released for Super NES in 1996. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong have vanished, leaving Dixie Kong and her young cousin Kiddy Kong to investigate the Kremlings’ latest scheme in the Northern Kremisphere. It is a solo platforming quest built around moving carefully through hazardous stages, finding secrets, and pursuing the missing Kongs.

Players guide a two-Kong team through forests, icy landscapes, caves, lakes, factories, and other themed areas. Dixie’s ponytail spin slows her fall and helps her cross long gaps, while Kiddy’s heavier build supports his own style of movement and attacks. Either Kong can be carried and thrown, a useful technique for hitting switches, reaching hidden spaces, and breaking through certain obstacles. Losing one partner changes the options available until a replacement barrel restores the team, so choosing the right character for a jump or puzzle is part of each level’s rhythm.

The route is more than a straight sequence of courses. Dixie and Kiddy travel the overworld in vehicles supplied by Funky Kong, and new craft open paths to further regions. Along the way, the Brothers Bear offer hints, services, and item trades; Bear Coins collected during play serve as currency for these encounters. The game also encourages thorough exploration through bonus areas, collectible DK Coins, and Banana Birds. Those secrets are woven into progress and completion goals rather than existing only as background extras, giving observant players reasons to revisit courses.

Animal helpers add more variety to the platforming. Ellie the elephant can draw up water and spray it at obstacles or enemies, while Parry the Parallel Bird flies overhead and can collect objects beyond the Kongs’ reach. Familiar allies including Enguarde, Squitter, and Squawks also return. Stages mix ordinary running and jumping with swimming, vehicle-focused challenges, and specialized level ideas, so the game frequently changes the demands placed on the player while retaining the series’ two-character foundation.

This Game Boy Advance edition is not simply the Super NES game in portable form. It adds Pacifica, a new world with additional stages and a boss, introduces the Kroctopus boss, expands the Banana Bird total, and adds the Brothers Bear character Bachelor. Its side activities were also reworked: Swanky’s attraction becomes a virtual-reality-style minigame, while Funky offers additional minigames. The handheld release uses a different soundtrack from the Super NES version, making it a distinct edition for players familiar with the earlier game.

Donkey Kong Country 3 remains a late entry in Rare’s original Donkey Kong Country trilogy, following Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest. Its lead duo distinguishes it from the Donkey-and-Diddy pairings of the previous games, and its explorable map, trading sequence, animal transformations, and extensive collectibles give the adventure a broad sense of discovery. A two-player option lets friends take turns controlling Dixie and Kiddy, while a single player can switch between them as the journey through the Northern Kremisphere unfolds.
