About

Earthworm Jim for Game Boy Advance brings the surreal 16-bit platform adventure to Nintendo’s handheld in 2001. Developed by Game Titan, this version adapts the Super NES release of the original Earthworm Jim; Majesco published it in North America, while THQ handled the European release. It is a single-player, side-scrolling action platform game starring Jim, an ordinary earthworm transformed when an indestructible high-tech space suit lands on him. Equipped with the suit, Jim is drawn into a deliberately absurd rescue mission involving Princess What’s-Her-Name and the enemies pursuing the stolen gear.

The central challenge is getting Jim through hazardous, enemy-filled stages by running, jumping, climbing, and finding a route past each obstacle. His blaster handles foes at range, while Jim’s own flexible body can be used like a whip at close quarters. The whip is more than an attack: it is also used to interact with the scenery, including swinging from designated hooks. That mixture of shooting, movement, and environmental timing gives the adventure a run-and-gun flavor without abandoning its platforming focus.

Earthworm Jim’s journey moves through the series’ famously strange locations. The Game Boy Advance port includes familiar settings such as the junkyard of New Junk City, Planet Heck, the rivers of Snot a Problem, and the lower-intestine setting of Level 5. Stages do not all ask for the same thing. Some emphasize platforming and combat, while others change the pace with unusual scenarios and set pieces. Boss encounters put Jim up against the offbeat adversaries associated with the first game, including Psy-Crow, Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, Evil the Cat, and other hostile figures from its cartoonish world.

A recurring element of the original design is how often it changes the rules around the basic platforming. Jim can move through side-view levels with his gun and whip, but the adventure also includes the behind-the-character Andy Asteroids races against Psy-Crow. These sequences send Jim through a tunnel on a rocket, collecting useful items and avoiding obstacles while racing for the finish. The variety extends to stages built around escorting Peter Puppy, navigating a snot-filled environment, and surviving the game’s exaggerated hazards. Progress therefore depends on adapting to each level’s particular task as well as learning Jim’s standard movement and attacks.

This Game Boy Advance edition is a portable conversion rather than a new Earthworm Jim installment. It follows the Super NES version’s overall content and structure, making it distinct from the Genesis original and the expanded Sega CD Special Edition. The series began with Shiny Entertainment’s 1994 release and quickly became known for combining animated characters, bizarre comedy, and action-platform gameplay; this 2001 cartridge gave Game Boy Advance players a handheld route through that first adventure. For players interested in the original Earthworm Jim story and its unusual stage concepts, the GBA release preserves the core premise, characters, and level-based quest in a compact format.
