About
Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha for PlayStation is a 1997 one-on-one fighting game developed by Arika and published by Capcom. Released in Japan as Street Fighter EX plus α in July before arriving in North America that September, it is the home-console counterpart to the arcade revision Street Fighter EX Plus, rather than a port of the original 1996 Street Fighter EX alone. The game brought Capcom's celebrated series into polygonal 3D visuals while keeping matches focused on the familiar left-to-right fighting plane, so spacing, jumping, projectiles, throws, and special-move inputs remain at the heart of every round.
A standard bout asks one fighter to defeat the other across timed rounds by emptying an opponent's life bar. The six-button Street Fighter layout supports punches and kicks at different strengths, with directional motions and button presses producing each character's signature attacks. Ryu and Ken still throw Hadokens and perform rising Shoryukens, while Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief, and M. Bison bring their established styles into the new visual engine. The shifting camera can accent a dramatic moment, but it does not turn the game into a free-roaming arena fighter: players still win through timing, positioning, anticipation, and clean execution along a 2D line.
EX Plus Alpha also adds systems that distinguish the EX branch from its Street Fighter II and Alpha relatives. Its Super Combo gauge is divided into three separate stocks, letting players spend meter on powerful attacks and other options. A Guard Break can crack an opponent's defense and leave them stunned when it connects, while cancelling links normal attacks and special moves into longer offensive sequences. Super Cancels extend that idea by allowing one Super Combo to flow into another. These mechanics make meter management important without abandoning the accessible round-by-round structure that defines Street Fighter.
The PlayStation roster contains 23 selectable fighters. Alongside returning Street Fighter regulars are many Arika-created combatants, including the masked salaryman hero Skullomania, bodyguard Cracker Jack, wrestler Darun Mister, karateka Allen Snider, Pullum Purna, Hokuto, Kairi, and the sword-bearing Garuda. The console version keeps the added characters from EX Plus, such as Evil Ryu, Bloody Hokuto, Cycloid-β, and Cycloid-γ, then adds Dhalsim and Sakura specifically for this release. That mix gives the game both recognizable series icons and a large cast whose new faces helped establish the separate identity of the EX games.
Beyond its Arcade mode, Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha supplies a dedicated two-player Versus mode, Practice for learning moves and combinations, Team Battle, Survival, Time Attack, and Watch matches between computer-controlled fighters. A hidden barrel-smashing bonus stage recalls a classic Street Fighter II-style diversion. The PlayStation presentation also includes character CG endings and an arranged soundtrack, giving solo play more to uncover than a simple arcade conversion. With one or two players supported, it works equally as a training ground for mastering a favorite fighter or as a local competitive game.
Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha occupies a particular place in the series' 1990s history. It was the PlayStation-only Alpha version of the EX Plus revision, created by Arika under Capcom's banner, and it arrived before the later Street Fighter EX2 and PlayStation 2-exclusive Street Fighter EX3. Its combination of polygonal characters, a traditionally linear combat system, EX-specific meter tools, and a console-expanded roster marks it as a distinct Street Fighter spin-off rather than a replacement for the sprite-based Street Fighter Alpha or Street Fighter III games.
