About
Tear Ring Saga: Yutona Hero Senki is a Japanese PlayStation tactical role-playing game released by Enterbrain on May 24, 2001. Developed by Tirnanog under Fire Emblem creator Shouzou Kaga, this Japan-only strategy RPG was first announced as Emblem Saga before arriving under its final name. It places a large fantasy-war narrative on the original PlayStation, combining story scenes, a broad cast and deliberate, turn-based battles played across square-grid maps.
The campaign takes place on the island continent of Riberia, whose old kingdoms have been overrun by the Zoa Empire. Prince Runan of Razelia escapes the fall of his home and begins a struggle against the invaders alongside Holmes, a prince from another Rive principality. Their shared cause gives Tear Ring Saga two central leaders rather than a single party: each commands an army for much of the adventure, while the plot follows the war, shifting alliances and the fate of the continent.
In battle, players move individual units in turns, position them around terrain and pursue map objectives such as defeating an opposing force, overcoming a key commander or securing the required location. Army composition, equipment and placement matter because units bring different roles to a fight. The game’s presentation keeps the focus on readable top-down tactical maps, character actions and the consequences of choosing how to approach an enemy formation, making each scenario a mixture of long-term preparation and immediate positioning.
A major feature of Tear Ring Saga is the division between Runan’s and Holmes’s forces. Runan’s side follows a more directed sequence of story battles against the empire, while Holmes’s route has greater room to travel, find treasure and strengthen his group outside the most direct path. The two armies meet at points in the campaign, allowing personnel and items to be reassigned. That structure makes the decision of who accompanies each leader part of the game’s strategy, and it gives the adventure two contrasting rhythms within one continuous storyline.
The game is closely associated with Kaga’s earlier work on Fire Emblem, but Tear Ring Saga is its own setting, cast and series. Its original Emblem Saga title was changed before release after a dispute over the name and its promotional connections, and it ultimately launched on Sony’s PlayStation rather than a Nintendo system. Enterbrain also supported the release with official guides, a soundtrack and a Famitsu Bunko novel adaptation. Tirnanog later followed it with the PlayStation 2 tactical RPG Tear Ring Saga: Berwick Saga, while the 2001 PlayStation game remains the first entry under the Tear Ring Saga name.
