About
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! for PlayStation is Insomniac Games' 1999 3D platform adventure and the direct follow-up to Spyro the Dragon. Published by Sony Computer Entertainment, it returns purple dragon Spyro and his dragonfly companion Sparx to a colorful world built around free-roaming hubs and portal-linked realms. The North American release carries the Ripto's Rage! name, while the same PlayStation game was sold in PAL regions as Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer, making both titles important to recognize when looking for this chapter of the original trilogy.
Spyro expects a holiday at Dragon Shores, but a portal sends him instead to Avalar. Elora, Hunter, and the Professor need a dragon capable of opposing the invading sorcerer Ripto and his followers Crush and Gulp. Ripto dislikes dragons and has taken control of Avalar's realms, leaving their inhabitants to deal with his disruptions. Spyro agrees to help, travelling from the green Summer Forest through Autumn Plains and Winter Tundra as he works toward a confrontation with Avalar's ruler.
The basic controls retain the first game's approachable moveset. Spyro can breathe fire, charge into foes and breakable objects, jump, and turn a jump into a glide to cross gaps or descend to distant platforms. Sparx circles Spyro as both companion and health indicator: damage changes the dragonfly's condition, while finding butterflies restores him. Gems scattered through each realm reward careful exploration and are also needed for transactions with Moneybags, the bear who repeatedly places access, passages, and training behind a fee.
Each ordinary realm supplies a talisman for reaching its conclusion, while optional assignments for local characters award orbs. Talismans open the way through the early homeworlds and their boss encounters; orb totals unlock further destinations and ultimately the path to the final battle. This gives the PlayStation game a progression system that balances straightforward finishing goals with reasons to revisit a stage. A Guidebook records collected gems, talismans, orbs, and other completion goals, so players can track what remains in a visited area.
Ripto's Rage! expands Spyro's movement over the previous adventure with skills obtained during the campaign. Swimming opens underwater routes, climbing lets him scale marked surfaces, and the headbash attack smashes particular rocks and cages from above. Realm-specific power-up gates add temporary abilities after Spyro has met their activation requirements, such as flight, supercharge, superflame, ice breath, invulnerability, or unusually high jumps. These powers turn familiar-looking spaces into short challenges based on speed, altitude, combat, or access to hidden treasure.
Avalar's residents also make the game's worlds more varied than a sequence of enemy courses. Spyro assists characters with self-contained tasks and minigames alongside standard platforming, while Hunter's athletic challenges and the Professor's inventions appear throughout the journey. The three hub areas contain a mix of regular realms, speedways, and locations for major fights. The single-player campaign therefore moves between exploration, collection, combat, time-based activities, and side objectives without losing the central aim of stopping Ripto.
As the second entry in Insomniac's original PlayStation Spyro series, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! established several figures and ideas that continued to matter to the franchise, including Hunter, Moneybags, and Ripto himself. It was followed on PlayStation by Spyro: Year of the Dragon in 2000. The original version was later included in the 2018 Spyro Reignited Trilogy, but the 1999 PlayStation release remains the source of Avalar, its three seasonal homeworlds, and the collection-driven adventure that defines this particular Spyro sequel.
