About
Carmageddon for PlayStation is a 1999 vehicular-combat racing game that brought the series’ lawless driving premise to Sony’s original console. Developed for PlayStation by Aqua Pacific and published in Europe by SCi, it is a separate late-1990s console edition rather than the original 1997 PC release. The game casts the player as Max Damage, a competitor in a bleak future contest staged beyond the protected population centres, where survival, spectacle, and destruction are all part of the race.
A Carmageddon PS1 event does not demand a conventional finish-line victory. Each course is governed by a timer, and checkpoints help keep that clock alive, but a race can also be settled by wrecking every rival car or eliminating the level’s zombie population. That three-way structure turns every event into a choice between route-finding, aggressive collisions, and wider exploration. It also means that falling behind on the road does not necessarily end a run: an opportunistic attack or a detour for targets can still change the result.
Driving is built around heavy impacts and recovery as much as speed. Players steer with the D-pad or analogue control, accelerate and brake, use a handbrake for sharper turns, and can repair a battered vehicle during a race. Cars take visible punishment, while ramming opponents and striking scenery creates a constant risk-and-reward balance. Pick-ups scattered through the environments add temporary effects, including protection and unusual handling changes, encouraging drivers to leave the marked route in search of an advantage.
The PlayStation release presents 30 levels across ten locations, including urban areas, desert scenery, a theme park, a resort, an arena, countryside routes, and an Aztec-themed course. Its package also lists six mission levels alongside the main events. The broad layouts support the game’s central idea that a course is more than a circuit: drivers can pursue checkpoints, hunt rivals, look for zombies, or investigate side paths and useful items. Progress through the championship opens further challenges and makes the car roster an important part of the experience.
More than 30 vehicles are included, with the PlayStation edition promoting ten new cars for this version. Different vehicles give the destructive racing a varied feel, whether a player wants to charge through opponents, try to keep control in tight spaces, or simply survive long enough to reach the next objective. The game supports first- and third-person views, letting players choose either a clearer view of the road ahead or an exterior perspective that makes the vehicle damage and chaotic encounters easier to follow.
Carmageddon on PS1 also includes a two-player split-screen head-to-head mode, so its unruly racing can be shared locally as well as played through the single-player progression. The PAL release was issued in English, French, Italian, and Spanish, and its dystopian zombie setting is central to this console version’s presentation. As a PlayStation entry in the Carmageddon series, it preserves the franchise’s defining mix of racing, open-ended objectives, vehicle damage, and darkly comic arcade-style mayhem while tailoring that formula to the hardware and features of the era.
