About

Policenauts for PlayStation is Konami’s Japanese science-fiction adventure game, released in Japan in January 1996 after its 1994 PC-9821 debut and a 3DO conversion. Written and directed by Hideo Kojima, this PlayStation version places its hard-boiled detective story in a future shaped by routine space travel. Its central figure is Jonathan Ingram, one of five specially trained police officers assigned to protect Beyond Coast, a self-supporting space colony. An accident sends him into space during a suit test; his cryogenic survival system preserves him, but he returns to society a quarter-century later while everyone he knew has moved on.

The game begins in 2040, with Jonathan working as a private investigator in Old Los Angeles. Lorraine, the former wife he lost during his long absence, asks him to find her missing husband, Kenzo Hojo. Her murder immediately turns that request into a personal case, sending Jonathan back to Beyond Coast and back into contact with Ed Brown, his former LAPD partner and now a senior officer in the colony’s police department. The investigation joins detective fiction with questions about life in space, medical technology, changing relationships, and the cost of the future society that Beyond Coast represents.

Policenauts is primarily a screen-based adventure. Players move a cursor around locations to inspect objects, collect clues, and trigger the observations needed to advance. Conversations offer dialogue choices, and progress commonly depends on examining the right detail or exhausting a useful line of questioning. That investigative structure makes Jonathan’s profession part of play rather than merely the story’s premise. The game occasionally breaks from its dialogue and searches with first-person shooting sequences, giving its otherwise deliberate casework bursts of direct action.

The PlayStation release uses animated sequences alongside interactive investigation scenes, helping its visual storytelling flow from cinematics into the places Jonathan can examine. It is a distinct console version rather than the original computer release: the PC-9821 game relied on pixel-art presentation, while the 3DO and later console editions introduced cel animation. The PlayStation port was followed by a separately issued Policenauts Private Collection bonus disc in Japan, containing supplementary material and selected shooting content; it should not be confused with the main two-disc game.

Beyond Coast is more than a backdrop for the mystery. Jonathan’s old Policenauts colleagues, the Beyond Coast Police Department, the pharmaceutical company Tokugawa, and people connected to Hojo’s work all become part of a case that steadily widens beyond one disappearance. Meryl Silverburgh and Dave Forrest of the BCPD’s Vice unit also support the investigation. The setting allows the game to contrast Jonathan’s Earthbound private-detective routine with a colony whose laws, institutions, and health problems have developed apart from the world he left.

Konami developed and published Policenauts, and Kojima’s team used it to extend ideas from the earlier adventure game Snatcher while building a new world and cast. The PlayStation edition arrived before the Sega Saturn port, which later added its own material and light-gun support. For players seeking a PlayStation-era story adventure, Policenauts combines point-and-click-style investigation, extensive voiced dramatic scenes, and a near-future police mystery centered on one man trying to understand a world that aged without him.
