About
Over Drivin' Skyline Memorial for PlayStation is a Japan-exclusive racing game released on October 2, 1997 by Electronic Arts Victor. It is a Nissan-sponsored reworking of the PlayStation edition of Electronic Arts' early Need for Speed lineage, following the Japanese Over Drivin' releases rather than presenting a separate sequel. Its defining idea is a focused tour through the Skyline name: instead of a broad international sports-car roster, the game is built around eight historic Nissan Skyline models and their individual driving character.
Races are presented in 3D on the road courses and circuit-style routes associated with the PlayStation version of Over Drivin'. The aim is straightforward driving competition: accelerate hard, place the car carefully through corners, avoid losing momentum, and reach the finish ahead of the opposing driver. Tournament-style progress provides a reason to master the available events, while the lineup's differing performance encourages players to adapt their braking, throttle use, and corner entry rather than treating every selection as the same machine.
The selection traces the Skyline across several eras, from the Prince Skyline and early 1960s S54B through the GT-R generations and on to the R32 and R33. That historical sweep is central to Skyline Memorial's identity. The cars are supported by vehicle information and presentation material, and the game bases distinctions such as engine characteristics, brake balance, and cockpit form on real-car data. The Nissan R390 GT1 race car is also an unlockable bonus, adding a dedicated competition machine alongside the road-going Skyline history.
PlayStation controls put steering on the directional pad, with X for acceleration and Square for braking; R1 and R2 handle upward and downward gear changes, and Triangle changes the camera. Four viewpoints are available, making it possible to favor a close driving view or a broader look at the car and road. The game supports one or two players, and its compatibility with Namco's NeGcon controller gives dedicated racing-control users another way to drive. These options fit a game that emphasizes observing the road and managing speed through bends.
Although it shares much of its course and racing structure with Over Drivin' DX, Skyline Memorial is a distinct regional edition with a deliberately Nissan-specific character. The Skyline-only roster, revised handling emphasis, Japanese release, and automotive presentation make it an unusual branch of the early Need for Speed family. For PlayStation racing-game players interested in the lineage of Nissan's celebrated nameplate as well as mid-1990s EA driving design, it captures both subjects in one compact, platform-specific release.
