About

Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena is a PlayStation strategy role-playing game developed by Hearty Robin and published in North America by Atlus in 1998. Known in Japan as Brigandine: Gensō Tairiku Senki, it turns the fantasy continent of Forsena into a contest of kingdoms, castles, Rune Knights, and summoned monsters. Rather than following one fixed party through a linear adventure, the game asks the player to take command of a nation and pursue the larger goal of unifying the continent while rival states expand and defend their own borders.

The conflict begins after a coup in Almekia. Zemeckis and his supporters seize the kingdom and establish the Esgares Empire, while Prince Lance escapes with loyal Rune Knights. Forsena is already divided among competing powers, so the player’s campaign is as much about choosing a starting ruler and protecting that nation’s holdings as it is about confronting Esgares. The original release normally lets players begin as one of five nations, each with its own ruler, Knights, geography, and position in the wider war.

Play unfolds in two connected turn-based layers. On the strategic map, each in-game month is divided into organization and attack phases. Castles generate mana, which supports monster summoning and the upkeep of an army, while Rune Knights can be reassigned between strongholds, equipped with items, sent on quests, or prepared for a new offensive. The value of a castle is therefore more than territorial: it is a defensive position, a source of resources, and a staging ground for the next advance.

When armies meet, Brigandine moves to hex-based tactical battles. A troop is led by a Rune Knight and filled out with fantasy creatures such as dragons, ghouls, and pixies. Every unit has role-playing statistics including health, experience, combat attributes, and, where applicable, magic. Rune Knights can change class when requirements are met, while monsters can be promoted into stronger forms. Their leader’s Rune Power limits how many monsters a troop can support, making army composition a continuing concern instead of a simple matter of recruiting every available creature.

Positioning matters because monsters are strongest near the Rune Knight who commands them. Straying outside that leader’s Rune Area weakens a unit and can leave it more vulnerable if the knight is forced to retreat. Battles also impose a twelve-turn limit on attackers, creating pressure to take the defending side’s castle instead of merely trading blows. A defeated or retreating Rune Knight can cause the rest of that troop to withdraw, while fallen monsters are gone permanently. Elemental affinities, spells, special attacks, terrain, and the order of movement add further decisions to encounters.

This structure gives Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena a distinctive blend of continent-wide conquest and small-unit tactics. Growth continues alongside the campaign: Rune Knights gain experience, monsters develop toward promotions, and quests may produce useful discoveries or setbacks while temporarily taking a knight away from the front. The PlayStation game is single-player, and its mix of named rulers, nation-specific circumstances, resource management, and tactical battles makes each choice of starting kingdom a different route through the same war for Forsena.

Brigandine arrived in Japan in April 1998 and reached North America later that year. Hearty Robin subsequently released the Japan-only Brigandine: Grand Edition for PlayStation in 2000. That expanded edition should not be confused with the original The Legend of Forsena: it added features including multiplayer support, additional content, and revisions to presentation and battle systems. The 1998 Atlus release remains the original PlayStation entry and established the setting and strategy-RPG framework later revisited by Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia.
