About
Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom for PlayStation is a science-fiction space-combat game from Origin Systems, published by Electronic Arts in 1997. It is the fourth main entry in the Wing Commander series and brings Colonel Christopher “Maverick” Blair back to the cockpit after the end of the Terran-Kilrathi War. The PlayStation edition adapts the 1996 computer game for Sony’s console while retaining its mixture of starfighter missions, live-action scenes, and player-led story decisions.
The campaign begins with Blair living in retirement before renewed tension between the Terran Confederation and the Union of Border Worlds draws him back into service. Reports of attacks and mysterious ships threaten to turn an unstable peace into another war, and Blair is assigned to investigate. The story follows his changing loyalties, military allies, and the evidence behind the crisis, placing the player in a conflict that reaches beyond ordinary patrol duty.
Between story scenes, players fly combat sorties in space. Missions call for duties such as engaging hostile fighters, protecting ships, investigating objectives, or surviving dangerous encounters. Combat centers on steering a starfighter, lining up gunfire, using missiles, managing defensive equipment, and reacting to opponents in three-dimensional space. Shields and armor provide separate layers of protection, while weapon energy and limited missile supplies make timing and positioning important during dogfights.
Wing Commander IV also uses a carrier-based structure. Blair receives mission briefings, can choose from available fighters and wingmen for many assignments, and returns to the ship after a sortie. The people flying alongside him have different personalities and combat abilities, while their relationships with Blair develop through conversations away from the cockpit. Dialogue choices let the player decide how Blair responds in key scenes, and those decisions can affect attitudes, assignments, story paths, and the eventual outcome.
The PlayStation version was made specifically for console play rather than simply copying the computer release. Its cockpit displays and graphics were reworked for television presentation, and it provides several control arrangements designed around the PlayStation controller. Some actions can be automated in the simplified setups, while another option more closely resembles the computer-style control approach. The game also supports Sony’s PlayStation Analog Joystick, offering a dedicated flight-control option for its starfighter battles.
Full-motion video remains a major part of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom on PS1. Mark Hamill returns as Blair alongside performers including Malcolm McDowell, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies, and Jason Bernard, with scenes connecting the missions and the branching drama. The PlayStation release spans four discs, compared with the original PC edition’s six CDs, and omits some transition footage to fit the console format. For PlayStation players, it is a distinctive entry in the series: a space-flight campaign built around both tactical sorties and choices that shape Blair’s role in a postwar political crisis.
