About

Sangokushi Eiketsuden for PlayStation is Koei’s 1996 tactical role-playing game set amid China’s Three Kingdoms era. Released in Japan on 29 March 1996 as 三國志英傑伝, it casts the player as Liu Bei, the warlord whose campaign seeks to restore the Han imperial court. Rather than being one of Koei’s broad kingdom-management simulations, this title tells a character-led military story through a sequence of battles. The PlayStation edition is a Japanese-language, single-player release controlled with a standard gamepad.

The campaign advances from battlefield to battlefield. Each scenario presents a tactical map and a victory condition, asking the player to direct Liu Bei’s forces through a particular confrontation before the story can continue. Play unfolds in turns, so positioning units, choosing targets, and deciding when to commit allies are central concerns. The goal is not simply to accumulate territory on an open-ended map; progress comes from completing the individual engagements that make up Liu Bei’s journey.

Its premise draws on the Three Kingdoms tradition, the celebrated Chinese historical setting also associated with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. Liu Bei is joined by his sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei as he gathers an army and confronts rival forces across a divided China. That focus gives Sangokushi Eiketsuden a more personal angle than a ruler-selection strategy game: the campaign follows one leader and the companions tied to his cause, while battles carry the narrative from one chapter to the next.

On PS1, the game uses a diagonal, isometric view for its tactical action. Players move forces and resolve combat within turn-based encounters, making the terrain of each map and the order in which troops act part of the challenge. The format sits between a strategy game and an RPG: military encounters are the main activity, but they are framed as a continuing tale about named historical and literary figures rather than as disconnected skirmishes. It is a solo experience, with no multiplayer mode listed for the PlayStation version.

Sangokushi Eiketsuden originated on Japanese computer platforms in 1995 before reaching consoles, including PlayStation in 1996. It also belongs to a line of Three Kingdoms tactical RPG spin-offs connected to Koei’s long-running Sangokushi, known internationally as Romance of the Three Kingdoms, series. Later companion games put different figures at the center of their campaigns, while this installment remains the Liu Bei chapter. For players exploring Japanese PS1 strategy and historical games, it offers a focused, scenario-based retelling of a familiar Three Kingdoms saga.
