About
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis for the original PlayStation is Capcom's 1999 survival-horror game set during the destruction of Raccoon City. Developed and published by Capcom, it stars former S.T.A.R.S. officer Jill Valentine, returning from the mansion incident of the first Resident Evil. Her goal is to escape a city devastated by Umbrella's T-virus outbreak, but the route through its streets, buildings and underground facilities is repeatedly blocked by zombies, mutated creatures and the relentless Nemesis.
Like the earlier PlayStation Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis combines 3D characters with fixed camera views over pre-rendered locations. Players explore each area, inspect objects, collect keys and supplies, and solve environmental puzzles to open the way forward. Ammunition, healing herbs and inventory slots are limited, which makes item management an important part of surviving. Safe rooms and storage boxes offer brief relief, while the streets of Raccoon City make the danger feel more exposed than the mansion-focused original.
Jill can use firearms ranging from her handgun to more powerful weapons, but conserving resources and choosing when to fight are central decisions. The PlayStation game adds a quick 180-degree turn and a dodge move, giving players more ways to create space when enemies close in. Explosive objects in the scenery can be used against nearby threats, and a gunpowder system lets players produce certain ammunition types. These additions give its combat a more action-oriented rhythm while keeping the tension of scarce supplies and hostile encounters.
Nemesis is the game's signature threat: a powerful bio-organic weapon sent to eliminate surviving S.T.A.R.S. members. It appears at key moments and can pursue Jill across connected areas, forcing a choice between confronting it or escaping. Its encounters are not merely ordinary boss fights; the possibility of its return shapes the journey through the city. The story also includes Carlos Oliveira and other members of Umbrella's Biohazard Countermeasure Service, while Jill's escape attempts reveal more of the corporation's role in the outbreak.
At several crisis points, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis presents a live selection that asks the player to decide immediately between two actions. The choice changes the following scene and can alter later events, encouraging another playthrough to see different outcomes. Completing the main game unlocks The Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal, a timed mode in which players guide a mercenary across Raccoon City while managing limited equipment and earning extra time through combat, rescues and exploration.
The original PlayStation release arrived in Japan in September 1999 and North America in November of that year, placing it after Resident Evil 2 while its events overlap that game's Raccoon City disaster. It was later adapted for Windows, Dreamcast and GameCube, but this entry describes the first PlayStation version and should not be confused with Capcom's 2020 remake, titled Resident Evil 3. For fans of classic fixed-camera survival horror, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis extends the early series' puzzle-solving and resource management with city exploration, branching moments and one of its most persistent pursuers.
