About

Xenogears is a PlayStation role-playing game from Square that places Fei Fong Wong, an amnesiac martial-arts teacher, at the center of a conflict far larger than his isolated village. After a battle devastates Lahan, Fei is drawn into the war between Aveh and Kislev and begins a journey that reaches from deserts and ruined cities to hidden powers governing the world.

Exploration combines towns, dungeons, and a three-dimensional world with platforming-style movement: characters can jump, climb, and search environments on foot. The party grows to include allies with different origins and motives, while the story gradually connects personal memories, political struggle, ancient technology, and questions about the history of the world.

On-foot battles use an Active Time Battle foundation, but attacks spend Action Points rather than simply selecting a single command. Choosing light, medium, and heavy strikes lets characters build toward learned Deathblow combinations, giving regular encounters a rhythm of setup and payoff. Ether abilities add another set of offensive and support options.

Many major fights take place in Gears, the game’s towering humanoid machines. Gear combat has its own equipment, fuel use, attack levels, and powerful Deathblows, so the same party shifts between martial-arts combat and mechanized battles as the situation demands. Managing fuel and deciding when to build attack levels becomes especially important in these encounters.

The presentation mixes in-game 3D scenes with hand-drawn anime sequences from Production I.G and pre-rendered CGI. Character designs were created by Kunihiko Tanaka, while the mechanical designs for the Gears were handled by Junya Ishigaki and Yoshinori Ogura. Yasunori Mitsuda composed the score, which includes the vocal theme “Small Two of Pieces.”

Released in Japan in February 1998 and in North America on October 20, 1998, Xenogears was Square’s first entry in what later became the broader Xeno lineage. Its two-disc PlayStation adventure is remembered for pairing a long-form science-fiction narrative with distinctive RPG combat built around both people and machines.
