About

Parasite Eve II for PlayStation is Square’s 1999 sequel to Parasite Eve, released in North America and Europe during 2000. It returns to the world of Aya Brea, the FBI agent with unusual mitochondrial powers, but shifts the series toward a more immediate blend of survival horror and action role-playing. Developed and published by Square, the single-player adventure follows Aya several years after the Manhattan incident, when reports of Neo-Mitochondrial Creatures draw her into a new investigation in Los Angeles and the Nevada desert.

The PlayStation game is built around exploration of ominous, pre-rendered locations and real-time encounters rather than the predecessor’s Active Time Battle-style clashes. Aya moves through rooms with a directional, tank-style control scheme, searches for keys and useful supplies, examines environments, and locks onto hostile creatures before firing. Enemies are visible in the field, so players can sometimes avoid a confrontation, but defeating them supplies the experience needed to develop Aya’s abilities and prepare for tougher encounters.

Aya’s Parasite Energy remains the game’s role-playing foundation. Experience points can be spent on powers divided into fire, water, wind, and earth groups, covering offensive attacks, recovery, status effects, and defensive or damage-related benefits. Her firearms, armor, ammunition, medicine, and tools also shape the moment-to-moment strategy. Weapons and protective gear can take compatible attachments, while armor affects durability and inventory capacity, making equipment choices as important as careful positioning during an attack.

The story begins with an emergency at Los Angeles’s Akropolis Tower, where Aya and her MIST colleagues confront creatures that appear more human than the threats she previously faced. Her trail leads to Dryfield, an isolated Nevada town, and then toward a secret underground complex connected to a plan involving artificial Neo-Mitochondrial life. Along the way, Aya works with figures including MIST agent Rupert Broderick, technician Pierce Carradine, survivor Gary Douglas, and the enigmatic investigator Kyle Madigan, while the young Eve becomes central to the crisis.

Parasite Eve II distinguishes itself from the first game through its survival-horror pacing, visible enemies, fixed cinematic viewpoints, and more direct combat rhythm, while retaining character growth and special powers. Square credited Kenichi Iwao as director and writer, and Tetsuya Nomura contributed character illustration alongside Fumi Nakashima. Completing the main adventure opens replay-focused challenges and additional equipment opportunities, giving the PlayStation release more to explore beyond Aya’s first route through the outbreak.
