About
Scrabble brings Hasbro's crossword-style word game to the original PlayStation. It supports up to four players on a 15-by-15 board, where competitors build intersecting words from letter tiles and try to finish with the highest score.
Each letter has its own value, while special board squares multiply letter or word totals. Players draw tiles, arrange words horizontally or vertically, and can extend existing plays as long as every newly formed word is accepted by the game's dictionary.
The PlayStation version automates scorekeeping and includes a Merriam-Webster Official Scrabble Players Dictionary reference, allowing players to check many word definitions and confirm whether a proposed entry is valid. This keeps the focus on planning words, managing a rack, and making the most of premium spaces.
Solo players can face Maven, a computer opponent with eight selectable difficulty levels. The adjustable challenge makes it possible to learn the board layout and scoring system before moving on to tougher matches.
Runecraft developed this console adaptation, and Ubisoft published it in 1999. Its presentation uses real-time 3D graphics while preserving the familiar rules, tile values, bonus squares, and turn-based pace of the tabletop game.
Whether played against the computer or with friends, Scrabble is a competitive word-building game about balancing vocabulary with positioning. High-value letters can produce major swings, but well-timed use of double- and triple-score squares is just as important.
