About
Soul Eater: Battle Resonance for PSP is a 2009 fighting game based on the Soul Eater anime. Developed by BEC and published by Bandai Namco Games, it was released in Japan for PlayStation Portable alongside a PlayStation 2 edition on January 29, 2009. The game adapts the early part of the anime rather than telling the entire manga story, bringing the students and opponents of Death Weapon Meister Academy into one-on-one combat. Maka Albarn and Soul Eater, Black Star and Tsubaki, Death the Kid with Liz and Patty, and other familiar faces appear in an action game built around the series' meister-and-living-weapon partnerships.
Soul Eater: Battle Resonance PSP uses a side-on 3D fighting format, with the characters moving and battling across arena stages inspired by the show. Standard attacks, defensive responses, and character-specific techniques form the basic exchanges, but the central mechanic is Soul Resonance. Successful hits and a dedicated input build the resonance gauge. When the gauge is filled, a paired meister and weapon can enter a stronger state, improving their capabilities and opening access to more forceful attacks. Characters who fight alone use corresponding wavelength techniques instead of a partner resonance move.
Managing that meter shapes the rhythm of every match. Players can spend a portion of the gauge on a Resonance Technique for a dramatic special attack, or build toward a more powerful option. Reaching the highest resonance level and filling the meter enables an Ultimate Resonance Technique, a major finishing move drawn from the abilities associated with the series. This gives the roster's teams distinct combat identities: the game treats a duo's bond as part of its offense rather than merely as background to the characters.
The game includes a story-focused Adventure mode that follows events from the anime's first 24 episodes, allowing selected central characters to take part in training and battles from that period. Outside the story, its fighting options let players use the broader cast in standalone battles. The PSP edition supports local two-player versus matches through the system's ad hoc connection, so each player can use a separate handheld and camera view. It is a portable adaptation of a TV anime with a roster of 13 characters and 11 stages, not the earlier Wii action-adventure Soul Eater: Monotone Princess or the Nintendo DS action game Soul Eater: Plot of Medusa.
Soul Eater: Battle Resonance places its character matchups within the gothic, supernatural school setting of the franchise. At Death Weapon Meister Academy, weapon meisters train alongside people able to transform into weapons, and the series' heroes aim to collect the souls needed to create a Death Scythe. The game uses that premise to frame Maka, Soul, Black Star, Tsubaki, Kid, the Thompson sisters, Crona, Ragnarok, and their rivals. For PSP players, Battle Resonance is a focused Japan-era anime fighter whose story material, character pairings, and meter-driven Soul Resonance system are its defining features.
