About

Tekken: Dark Resurrection for PSP is Namco Bandai's 2006 handheld version of the arcade revision of Tekken 5, developed for the system by Eighting. Released in North America in July 2006, it brings the King of Iron Fist Tournament's one-on-one 3D fighting to the PlayStation Portable under the shortened Tekken: Dark Resurrection title. The game builds on Tekken 5's roster, arenas, and tournament storyline while adding characters and revisions created for Dark Resurrection.

Matches retain Tekken's four-limb attack layout: the PSP face buttons correspond to left and right punches and kicks, while the directional controls and analog stick handle movement. Fighters can advance, retreat, crouch, jump, and use the series' sidestep movement around their opponent before applying high, mid, and low attacks. Each round is won by depleting the rival's health bar, or by holding more health when time expires, and a match requires the selected number of round wins. Learning individual command strings, defensive responses, throws, and juggle opportunities is central to improving beyond basic button presses.

The PSP game includes several ways to fight alone. Quick Battle offers VS CPU matches and elimination-style Team Battle with up to eight combatants per side, while Story Battle follows a selected fighter through character-specific events. Arcade Battle sends players through named ghost opponents, tracks a separate rank for each character, and permits a choice of the next challenger after a win. Tekken Dojo adds a longer progression path: players join dojos of increasing difficulty, compete in league play and tournaments, and work toward graduating to tougher schools. Practice mode supports learning controls and move commands, and the Attack menu contains score-focused challenges.

Dark Resurrection continues the plot after the fourth King of Iron Fist Tournament, when the struggle within the Mishima family leaves the Mishima Zaibatsu's leadership in doubt and another tournament is announced. Familiar competitors including Jin Kazama, Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi Mishima, King, Paul Phoenix, and many more return. The revision introduces Emilie 'Lili' De Rochefort and Sergei Dragunov, and brings Armor King back into the lineup. Its expanded cast and move adjustments distinguish this release from the original PlayStation 2 Tekken 5, while its story remains tied to that game's conflict.

Building a personal record is another substantial part of the PSP package. Victories earn fight money that can be spent on character customization items, and profiles record battle results and stored ghosts. A ghost saves a player's fighting tendencies for computer-controlled opponents; saved ghosts and ranking data can be exchanged with another PSP, while the game's network options also supported downloading ghost data and registering rankings. Unlockable bonus games, including Tekken Bowl, offer a change from standard versus bouts, and the Theater lets players revisit obtained movies and listen to music.

For local competition, Tekken: Dark Resurrection supports PSP wireless ad hoc VS and Team Battles. Its Game Sharing option can send the data needed for a VS Battle to another PSP, though the receiving session is temporary and stages cannot be chosen in that mode. The portable release is distinct from the arcade original and the later PlayStation 3 downloadable version: it pairs the Dark Resurrection fighting update with a broad suite of handheld-focused solo, profile, and wireless features. That combination made it an important early Tekken entry on PSP and a dense portable adaptation of the series' 3D tournament combat.
