About
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier for PSP is a 2009 action-platform adventure developed by High Impact Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Set after the earlier Jak and Daxter games, it sends Jak, Daxter, and Keira toward the Brink, a remote region at the edge of their world. An escalating shortage of Eco, the energy that powers the series' technology and abilities, turns Keira's search for answers into a conflict involving Sky Pirates, the city of Aeropa, and an ancient source of power.
The game combines on-foot exploration with combat and jumping challenges. Players guide Jak through islands, industrial sites, settlements, and enemy-held locations, using platforming movement to cross gaps, scale structures, and search for routes through each area. The Gunstaff serves as Jak's primary weapon and can be fitted with different modifications, while Eco lets him employ familiar special abilities in battle. Precursor orbs and other collectibles reward thorough exploration and support the game's upgrade systems.
Aerial missions give The Lost Frontier a distinct rhythm on PSP. Jak pilots the Hellcat and later other aircraft across airborne routes, taking on rival fliers and larger threats while moving the story between locations. Aircraft can be customized with parts and weapons, so the flying sections are more than brief transitions: ship performance and armament matter when confronting Sky Pirate attacks. These sequences sit alongside the series' character-driven action rather than replacing its platforming focus.
The story begins with Jak and Daxter escorting Keira as she investigates the Eco crisis, but a run-in with the Sky Pirate Captain Phoenix leaves the group stranded near the Brink. Their efforts to repair the Hellcat lead them toward Aeropa and its ruler, Duke Skyheed, whose plans involve Dark Eco and military power. Daxter remains the duo's comic counterpoint, while several sections let him transform into Dark Daxter, giving the smaller hero a more aggressive temporary role.
Designed for both PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2, the PSP edition is built around portable single-player play while retaining a substantial campaign. Its environments, weapons, airborne encounters, and character banter carry the series into a new region instead of retelling an earlier Jak adventure. The game also includes Hero Mode, allowing a completed save to be replayed while keeping accumulated equipment, abilities, secrets, and unspent Precursor orbs.
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier is a later entry in Sony's action-platform series, following the original trilogy, the racing-focused Jak X, and the PSP game Daxter. For players exploring the PSP library, it offers a full-length Jak and Daxter story that balances traversal, Gunstaff combat, Eco powers, and customizable aerial battles. Its focus on the Brink and the worldwide Eco disturbance gives the familiar heroes a setting and central problem separate from the earlier adventures.
