About
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows – Amazing Allies Edition is the PlayStation Portable version of Activision’s 2008 Spider-Man release, developed for the PS2 and PSP by Amaze Entertainment. It reached North America on October 21, 2008; European and Australian releases followed that month. Despite its shared title, characters, and outbreak premise, this is a separately designed game rather than a handheld conversion of the free-roaming PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii release.
The story begins when Spider-Man’s fight with Venom ends in an explosion that spreads symbiote infection across Manhattan and leaves the black suit bonded to Peter again. Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. quarantine the city as hostile symbiotes, super-villains, and infected civilians turn the crisis into a race to contain the outbreak. Peter’s relationships and the direction of his response develop through conversations and decisions made during the campaign.
Instead of swinging through an open city, the PSP game follows a 2.5D side-scrolling action format. Spider-Man travels through staged areas, climbs and leaps across platforms, uses web moves to reach opponents, and clears repeated combat encounters on the way to objectives and bosses. Story chapters are supplemented by missions that keep the focus on fighting through the infected city rather than free exploration.
Spider-Man can swap at will between his classic red-and-blue costume and the black symbiote suit. The normal suit emphasizes nimble web-based attacks, while the black suit supplies more aggressive symbiote-powered strikes. Experience gained in battle can be spent on combat and movement upgrades, giving the player room to improve the techniques used most often as the opposition grows tougher.
The Amazing Allies system brings other Marvel characters into the action. Allies are unlocked as the story advances and can be called in within designated areas to assist Spider-Man, while choices in dialogue help shape how some characters view him and can affect later outcomes. This gives the compact, level-based adventure a team-up angle alongside its suit-based combat.
Amazing Allies Edition differs fundamentally from the main Web of Shadows releases: it is a 2.5D scrolling beat ’em up with a revised story and a smaller upgrade set, not an open-world action game. It also differs from the Nintendo DS game, which has its own Metroidvania-style design. The PSP edition’s identity is therefore its linear portable campaign, two-suit combat, and summonable allies—not a scaled-down version of the larger console world.
