About

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 is a 2009 action role-playing game that brings Marvel Comics heroes and villains into a portable, squad-based adventure on PSP. It follows 2006's Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and adapts ideas from the Secret War and Civil War comic storylines rather than retelling them exactly. Activision published the game, while Savage Entertainment developed the PSP version, a handheld adaptation of the PlayStation 2 game. Its comic-book premise, wide character selection, and direct arcade-style combat make it a natural fit for players looking for a Marvel action RPG on Sony's handheld.

The campaign opens with Nick Fury leading an unauthorized S.H.I.E.L.D. operation in Latveria, where a strike against Lucia von Bardas and Doctor Doom's forces has lasting consequences. A later disaster in Stamford intensifies public pressure for the Superhuman Registration Act, dividing the superhuman community. Players choose either the Pro-Registration side associated with Iron Man and Mister Fantastic or the Anti-Registration resistance led by Captain America and Luke Cage. That decision changes several missions, opponents, and the conclusion, giving the story two main paths and a reason to revisit the campaign.

Play unfolds from an elevated action-RPG viewpoint. The player assembles a team of four from a roster that mixes familiar Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four members, Spider-Man allies, and Marvel villains. Heroes fight with light and heavy attacks, grabs, jumps, and character-specific powers, while inactive teammates are managed through S.H.I.E.L.D. access points instead of the on-the-fly swapping found in some other versions. The PSP release is a single-player experience, so the full squad is directed by one player with computer-controlled teammates rather than cooperative multiplayer.

Every hero has health, energy, attributes, and a set of powers that can be improved with points earned through leveling. Equipment and collectible items provide additional statistical bonuses, while defeated enemies and breakable scenery can yield health, energy, and resources. This gives the game a layer of character-building beneath its quick brawls: a player can emphasize survivability, damage, or particular powers, then reshape a squad to suit a boss encounter or a favorite group of Marvel characters. Simulator missions and story progress unlock further playable heroes and rewards.

Ultimate Alliance 2's signature addition is the Fusion system. By filling a shared meter in battle, two selected heroes can combine abilities into a special attack. Some fusions concentrate damage on a powerful target, others clear crowds, and guided combinations let the player sweep attacks through scattered enemies. The feature turns superhero pairings into a practical combat choice as well as a fan-pleasing spectacle, encouraging players to experiment with different lineups. A full meter can also be used to revive a fallen ally, adding a tactical decision during longer fights.

The PSP edition shares the smaller-scale presentation and progression style of the PlayStation 2 and Wii releases rather than the distinct high-definition console build. It preserves the core Civil War conflict, the four-character party structure, progression systems, unlockables, and fusion attacks within a version designed for portable play. The campaign moves through comic-book locations including Latveria, New York, Wakanda, the Negative Zone, and the battle against the nanite-controlled force known as the Fold. Familiar characters can appear as allies, enemies, or boss battles depending on the side selected.

For Marvel fans, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 on PSP is a compact superhero crossover with a branching political conflict at its center. Its action remains accessible—choose a team, use powers, collect upgrades, and push through groups of enemies—but the allegiance choice and broad roster give the adventure more variety than a straight linear brawler. The handheld version is best approached as a solo Marvel action RPG: a chance to build a dream team, explore two versions of a Civil War-inspired campaign, and trigger screen-filling fusion attacks on the go.
