About

The Warriors brings Rockstar’s hard-edged adaptation of Walter Hill’s 1979 cult film to PSP. Set in a stylized, grimy vision of 1970s New York, it follows the Coney Island gang as a citywide truce meeting turns disastrous and their trip home becomes a fight through hostile territory. The story does more than reenact the film’s famous night: it reaches back to show how the crew formed, built its reputation, and came to face its rivals before the chase to Coney Island begins.

This is a third-person action brawler built around close-quarters fights that can suddenly swell into crowded gang rumbles. Playable Warriors have their own strengths, while computer-controlled allies join the action and respond to quick Warchief commands. Light and strong attacks, grabs, throws, counters, ground attacks, and Rage give the combat its rhythm; bottles, boards, bats, bricks, knives, and other pickup weapons add to the disorder. Firearms are not part of the Warriors’ arsenal, keeping the confrontations focused on fists, improvised tools, and gang tactics.

The campaign moves through more than twenty story missions and flashbacks, putting different members of the gang in the lead. Objectives stretch beyond simply clearing a street: players tag turf, rob stores, mug pedestrians, escape police attention, pursue rivals, and take on stealthier tasks when a direct confrontation would bring in too much trouble. The Coney Island hideout acts as a home base for training, replaying completed missions, checking unlocks, and heading out on patrols between story chapters.

Rockstar Leeds developed this PSP edition, released in 2007, as a close portable version of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox game. It retains the story, flashback levels, minigames, and multiplayer offerings rather than adding a separate handheld chapter. The condensed presentation comes with familiar PSP compromises: visuals are scaled down, the lack of a second analog stick makes camera and command handling less immediate, and heavy action can show slowdown. The music, sound effects, and returning film cast remain central to the atmosphere.

The portable format also reshapes co-op. Two players can connect through ad hoc wireless for story missions, so each player has a separate PSP screen instead of sharing a split view. A partner must join when the mission initially loads, however; the drop-in, drop-out option available on the console versions is not present. The extra modes include quick rumbles, a capture-the-girl variation, and King of the Hill, giving the gang warfare room to continue outside the main campaign.

Armies of the Night is available from the outset on PSP, a bonus side-scrolling beat ’em up that pays deliberate homage to arcade-era street fighters. Its two-player action offers a sharp change of pace from the 3D campaign, while the rest of the unlockable material and replayable missions reward a return to the Warriors’ turf. For PSP players, The Warriors delivers the full sweep of the gang’s rise and escape in a portable package, from the early Coney Island clashes to the dangerous journey across New York.
