About

Star Wars: Battlefront II on PSP is the portable 2005 edition of LucasArts' large-scale Star Wars shooter, adapted for PlayStation Portable by Savage Entertainment from Pandemic Studios' sequel to the 2004 Battlefront. Released in North America on November 1, 2005, it turns battles from the prequel and original-trilogy eras into missions that can be played from either a first-person or third-person infantry view. The game places Republic, Separatist, Rebel, and Imperial forces on recognizable worlds and battlefields, then lets players enter the action as an ordinary soldier, a specialist unit, a vehicle crew member, starfighter pilot, or, on appropriate maps, a celebrated Jedi or Sith character.

Most battles revolve around territory, reinforcements, and command posts. A player chooses a unit class at the start of a round or after respawning, with standard infantry roles covering direct combat, heavy weapons, sniping, and engineering duties. Faction-specific specialist classes add other tools, including jet packs, shields, and unusual weapons. Capturing command posts creates new places for a side to spawn and can steadily reduce the opposing force's ability to stay in the fight. Missions may also impose particular goals, so success can depend on more than simply outlasting the other army. The result is a shooter where moving between objectives, changing classes to suit the situation, and taking advantage of nearby machinery matter alongside aiming.

The PSP version preserves Battlefront II's mix of ground action, vehicles, and space combat. On planetary maps, troops can ride or operate available vehicles while fighting through locations drawn from the films. In space engagements, a player can launch from a capital ship, dogfight in starfighters, and attack the enemy vessel's systems. Boarding an opposing capital ship makes space battles a two-front contest: a pilot may strike from outside, or land in the hangar and push through the interior to seize positions and sabotage vital targets. Playable heroes and villains provide a temporary change of pace from blaster combat, using lightsabers and Force abilities when the match and map allow them.

Its single-player offering was tailored to the handheld. Instead of the Rise of the Empire story campaign found in several other releases, Star Wars: Battlefront II on PSP includes three exclusive challenge types: Imperial Enforcer, Rogue Assassin, and Rebel Raider. These scenario-driven assignments give the player particular targets and objectives across different locations, whether eliminating designated opponents or recovering items. Instant Action provides pick-up battles with selectable settings and modes, while Galactic Conquest frames victories as a wider campaign for control of planets. This combination gives the game both short, self-contained missions and a strategic layer in which performance on individual battlefields contributes to a larger galactic struggle.

Savage Entertainment also shaped the controls around the PSP's compact layout. The analog stick handles movement, while the face buttons, directional controls, and shoulder buttons are used for firing, looking, jumping, changing equipment, entering vehicles, and accessing maps or objectives. Four preset control arrangements—Default, Basic, Advanced, and Retro—are available, and aiming assistance can be enabled outside the highest difficulty setting. Ammunition, weapon heat, health, stamina, reinforcements, objective progress, and map information are displayed on the HUD, helping players keep track of a match even when its fighting spreads across a large arena.

Multiplayer on the original PSP release is local Ad Hoc play over Wi-Fi rather than online infrastructure play, supporting two to four nearby systems. That portable social option, together with quick objectives and the three PSP-only challenges, distinguishes this version from its PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows counterparts. As part of the original Battlefront era, Star Wars: Battlefront II on PSP captures the series' central idea: Star Wars conflicts are not viewed only through a single hero, but through the shifting roles of soldiers and pilots working across a wider battlefield.
